Sorrento is a really pretty town. Definitely head thru if you get a chance.

I was in Venice a few years back. I only spent a day there but it was OK...not great.
Lots of glass for sale and those stupid drama mask thingys. I recall seeing alot of stray dogs too...and some of them were some nasty little bastards. Lots of Africans selling fake 'designer' bags too. I remember a few gypsies walked buy us and I thought that they would try to pick my pockets. Oh, and the cops were all about 17 years old. |

I thought about Venice but the more I read about Italy, the more I wanted to head south.
Definitely going to Sorrento. Love to see the catacombs (and visit Sicily in general) but the timing was just bad. I'd be spending too much time on a train. So saving that for next time. I keep reading about the gypsies and all the pickpocket scams, hopefully I don't look like a mark. |

I'm going to Rome the 1st week in July & staying in Piazza Navona. We booked through Travelpapa & got 3 roundtrip coach fares for $3,400 on
Lufthansa through Munich.
You have to book a reservation to tour the Galleria Borghese & the Catacombs are on the list |

Rome is chock full of Africans with fake purses and luggage. I spent hours in the piazza Risorgimento watching them play cat and mouse with two different
police agencies and one rival gang. It was fascinating.
Pompeii is full of stray dirty dogs. It is amazing though. |

I lucked out when I went. My wifes airline flys direct from JFK and since my wife is NY based...we parked for free. She worked the first class passengers,
which I got a seat for free (perks of the job) and I drove with the crew van to the hotel room that was also for free.
we had a 24 hour lay over and flew back the next day. coolest thing was James Gandolfini, John Turturro (one of my fav's) and Aida Turturro happened to be flying to Venice to promote 'Romance and Cigarettes' at the Venice Film Festival and my wife was their flight attendant. SOmewhere over the French Alps I hear...'hey Fistie, come on back here.' I turn and see my wife all smile laughing with John Turturro. I went back and met him and actually did my best Jesus Quintana (big lebowski) impression. I told him how awesome he was in Quiz show and he seemed to actually take the compliment like it meant something. It was a great memory. And to think, when wifeys company called and asked her to work international that day...and she said there was 20 open first class seats (meaning I was assured a seat) that I almost said no to play in a wiffleball tourny. |

I got my ticket for $330 RT from Tampa.
The next day it was about $900. |

IMO:
I agree with squash, if you've never been the beaten path is the best way to start. Rome is awesome, get a guide for the forum and Palentine hill, it helps make more sense of the stuff you see. Venice is very cool but the restaurants are overpriced. The giant sailshaped pizzas in the student quarter are great (and cheap) though. Florence is only good for the art, and you'll see a shitload of art elsewhere. David isn't really worth the Euros, especially as you can't take a picture of him. To be honest, wouldn't go back there again. Herculeneum is better than Pompeii. Pompeii is bigger, but Herculenum is better preserved. |

I'm doing some touristy stuff on the beaten path but I'm most excited about doing the stuff that nobody does- seeing the country and real Italy and
real Italians.... in my opinion, it makes for a more memorable time than seeing a bunch of museums.

I'm leaving tomorrow! Guess I'll miss out on all the April fools fun here but I'm sure I can console myself with some hot italian men.

I went last year. Contrary to what others say here, Venice is worth a visit if you have time. It is very unique and I loved having no cars around.
Sorrento was our favourite place, likely because we stayed at a great little hotel up on the hill with amazing views. |
