The pizza is important. Almost as important as the wine.

If you're going to Italy for pizza, you are more white trash than anyone could have expected.

venice sucks. Milan is iffy.
Go south. For real. Naples is ok, but sorrento is heaven. From there you can go to vesuvious, pompeii, and capri. But if north is your thing Bologna and Modena and Sienna or even Ancona is much more interesting than venice. Venice is for day trippers on cruise ships. Milan is very business oriented. Florence is great, but touristy. all in all, it's like the US. South is more friendly, north is more refined. It all depends on your taste. But rome is rome. And spending a month there would not be enough. do you know where you are staying in rome? The neighborhood around the vatican is my favorite. |

As for pizza and wine, the worst pizza you get in italy will be better than the best you get here. Naples is where it was invented and that is where it is
best, but a street cart in rome will still be unreal to you.
and you can not have bad wine in italy. Just order house wine wherever you eat. It will be brought to you in a pitcher, usually from a big keg they have somewhere in the restaurant and it will be amazing and less expensive than water. And try grappa wherever you go. |

In Rome I'm staying at a B&B close to the Trevi Fountain. I'll be there for part of the Catholic holy week. I'm not catholic but it should be
interesting to see all the events surrounding it.
Deciding where to go after that is the hardest part... I only have 12 days and I need so much more. |

Decide on a loose list of places you think you'd like to go. Take the train or rent cars and just go to the first one and if you like it stay a few days,
if you don't move on. Don't lock in to anything. You can find places and make reservations on the fly. It's a much better way to do it. Be flexible
though because the trains go on strike a lot and there are festivals and all kinds of things that will effect your ability to see places. Buy a fodors or
frommers or if you have little money, a let's go italy.

You should definitely go to Florence and see the statue of David while you're there. Pictures really don't do it justice.

Yeah, because seeing a touristy statue is eversomuch better than meeting real people and experiencing Italian life.
I want to go to sardinia. |

It's not like it takes 12 days to go look at the statue. There's plenty of time to eat pizza with sweaty hairy locals afterward.

Dont forget to pack a neon fanny pack and your favo "NEVER [crying bald eagle] FORGET" trucker cap. Also, see if you can redeem your Pizza Hut
coupons over there. It would be an injustice to the system if you couldn't.

Buy gold, you will find great deals on chains and bracelets.
I was there years ago and I had fun in some no-name border town up in Northern Italy. |

I made a loose itinerary.... I took a look at hotel reservations and all the nice ones seemed to be booking up fast so I had to just go for it. I'm
spending 4 days in Rome, 2 in Florence and 4-5 in Naples/Sorrento/Capri/Amalfi Coast area.
Also been learning Italian every spare second... I dreampt in Italian last night, it was weird. But at least I won't be regarded as some dumb tourist. Unless the fanny pack and USA sweatshirt give it away. |
