The difference here being is using context clues. Here is how the scene went.

Sawyer, Juliet, Faraday etc are in the past banging on the Swan hatch with Desmond inside. He wont come out.

Faraday tells the losties he will never come out, because none of them had ever met Desmond in the past because Desmond never had the memory of doing so. Desmond never remembered opening the door to find Sawyer and Juliet and Faraday there cause it never happened. And Faraday explicity tells them, hey thats how time travle and fate works...the force of fate will not allow them to make something happen that didnt or wasnt supposed to. No matter how hard they try.

The losties, grumpy, take off leaving Faraday behind.

Faraday has a lightbulb moment, mumbling under his breath that despite what he just said, Desmond is different/special. So he knocks on the door, Desmond opens it. He gives Desmond the message, and it pops into his brain years later because it just happened. It was a new event in the past

So, from this quick sequence of events in that one scene....we see Faraday setting up the rules of how time travel and fate are supposed to work, that no matter how hard you try to change things, fate will always try to stop you and course correct, that everything that has happened happened, and it was always supposed to be that way, past/present/future has all happened...then we see him aknowledge that Desmond might be the possible exception to this rule!...then Faraday puts this theory to the test and knocks on the door with no one else around...then Desmond actually answers the door, Faraday gives him a message, and we SEE Desmond getting the NEW memory years later.

All of that clearly explains how Desmond is special and in what way. So no, i disagree it "couldnt mean anything..." :P We know what Faraday meant.

That scene was an anomaly event in time travel. Its unlike anything we had seen from the actions of other losties back in time (unlike Locke meeting Widmore in 1954, that was an event that had always happened, wasnt new. Thats why Widmore always had a memory of Locke. His memory of Locke didnt suddenly appear ala Desmonds new memory). The reason it was easier for Faraday to get Desmond to answer a door he was never supposed to answer, the reason Desmond was able to fight against the force of fate with Faraday and not say, Sawyer, is cause Desmond already has a history of meeting Faraday in different times when he wasnt supposed to. Desmond is Faradays constant after all. So its easier for that NEW encounter that never was supposed to happen..to happen.

I hope this makes sense to people still thinking that Widmore or Daniel didnt get the memory of Locke or Jin until much later, like desmond, or that their meeting was some sort of new event that never happened...they ALWAYS had the memory of time traveling Locke and Jin cause it ALWAYS had happened cause it was ALWAYS supposed to. Its not like what we see happening with Desmond, or did happen to Desmond in his previous time traveling episodes last season. Desmond never met Faraday at the college in the 80's. That was a new event due to Desmond's specialness. Thats why the stuff Faraday wrote in is book about Desmond suddenly appeared..wasnt always there...Desmond is D-I-F-F-E-R-E-N-T.

Dont judge how time travel and fate is working on this show by looking at what happens with Desmond. Hes, so far, the exception to the rule.

As for "Constants", they could be anything. As Faraday explained it, you can have multiple Constants. Any object (or person) you know in thoughout several time periods.

Ah, but you only need a Constant if you are disrupting the past to create a new memory in the future.

Our current time traveling Losties are travelling in the past with their present bodies/minds...thus they arent creating a new memory for themselves that wasnt there. Unlike Desmond, who went back in time consciously into his past body, his past life...but with his current mind. Which allowed him to try and change his past history with his knowledge of the future. Thus, meeting Charlie and Faraday in the past, when he never met them the first time around. THAT created a whole new memory in his head that wasnt there and contradicts his present consciousness...they dont match.

Thats why his nose started bleeding and he was going to die. Only by getting a constant between the disparate times (Penny) could his mind be allowed to converge both sets of pasts into one. Thus survive. Faraday likewise had to find a constant (Desmond) because of Desmond. Desmond meeting Faraday in the past in his conscious jaunt, created two different memories in Faradays head as well. Faraday never met Desmond in his past (thats why he didnt recognize Desmond the first time he saw him)..only after Desmonds unprecedented time traveling, did the memory of meeting Desmond pop into Faraday's mind (in fact he told Desmond to go meet him, knowing hed be setting himself up with a new memory/past that never happened) The reason Faraday didnt die from the two different past memories colliding, or even get a nosebleed, is cause the only constant he needed was Desmond himself. Which he already had. Charlie didnt need a constant, because he was luckily dead by the time Desmond did his unprecedented special thing :p Desmond needed Penny because Demond's farthest past memory disparity involved Penny...so he needed to make contact with her in the present in order to come to terms with that new past and his current present.

This is different from the time traveling losties we see now. They dont need constants because they arent creating new memories for themselves in the past that contradict their present memory. Its already their present mind. They could cause a problem ala Desmond if they tried to meet themselves in their past..because their past self would never have the memory of meeting themself, thus causeing the conflict of two memories...but as we know, fate/the island is keeping these losties from doing stuff like that, doing things they never did in the past.

Widmore doesnt need a constant, like Faraday did with Desmond, because every time traveller Widmore met in the past (Sawyer, Faraday, Locke, Juliet) were all people he had always met in the past, it wasnt a new event (unlike Desmonds time traveling).

The Widmore we saw last season, always had the memory of meeting Locke and others, even though WE hadnt seen the time traveling stuff yet, and even though the time traveling stuff hadnt happened yet to allow Locke to meet him. But it HAD happened. It was always supposed to happen.

But, Desmond is different.

Oh, and more importantly, Desmond is different!
