I don't think their ending could have been better. Luke wants to prove that deaf people can do anything, yet makes his mom do most of the Roadblocks, including the tough physical ones. When he actually does the final roadblock, he panics and throws a hissy fit, causing him to lose focus. His ego's so big that he can't stand not being right, and it causes him to do stupid shit. And it's because of this that Victor passes his ass and nabs the million from his spastic ass.

He wasn't the reason his team went far; it was all Bob. Once Luke had to actually do something, they blew their lead and ended up in third place, only advancing because of the Gingerbeasts' sympathy. The hilarious thing is, if Bob did it, they probably would have won. Luke would probably still be there if Bob didn't tell him to help Jamie/Cara, getting the solution from them in return.

Luke is one of the weakest racers ever, not because he's deaf, but because he's an immature sheltered bitch who has no idea how the real world works, probably because Bob coddles him so damn much. The few times he has actual responsibility in the race, he has a temper tantrum when he's not right the first time, and that is why they lost. Bob may be a shitty mother, but at least she's a good racer to carry this useless piece of shit with her the entire race.

It's a good thing Luke isn't the spokesperson for the deaf community, no matter how much he claims he is.
