Ratings were down for the premiere last night. People don't want "new and improved" TAR. We liked the old TAR just fine, thank you very much.Sorry, Jiffy, but ratings don't really work that way. Viewers didn't know in advance about the new graphics, split screen editing or lack of fake airport drama, so it's ridiculous to say that format changes had any effect on the ratings for the season premiere. Any drop in ratings (assuming that's true) usually has much more to do with the competition (i.e., lineup on other channels) on any given night, and the overall number of viewers will certainly change if the premiere episode occurs on a holiday weekend, when a good chunk of the population happens to be traveling or enjoying the long weekend. |

I really liked the new look Amazing Race. The first episode is always so frenetic with 11 teams and trying to find them all air time, get a sense of the
scenery and surroundings and all the game play in the tasks. I loved the split screens and time stamps, and the music and graphics were in desperate need of
updating and I really enjoyed that as well.
The different cities as landing endpoints could be disasterous if one group gets severely handicapped by something like a train delay. But this system worked so well this episode I think it is a great variation from airport drama. |

I liked the slightly faster pace and a few of the editing changes. I had heard the show had undergone a massive overhaul in a thread in LTS, so I was prepared
for a radically different show, but it didn't feel that new to me. This premiere was really pretty good, I thought. Normally it takes me a while
to get into a season of TAR because it just gets boring without having anything particularly invested in the characters (which is probably part of the reason I
liked TARAS so much). Nobody this season stood out to me as particularly entertaining, as is the case in most TAR premieres, but the fast pace and overall
editing really helped me enjoy the episode anyway. We still got our classic TAR moments, including a footrace to the Pit Stop. Will I be happy if they stop
focusing on the deaf kid so much? Sure, but obviously they were gonna explore that novelty when he ends up placing 1st on the very first leg of the race.
I'm hoping he'll fade away a bit more now that he's "proven himself." And yeah, I get tired of making stuff like bungie jumping so
dramatic, but that's standard TAR fare, so it's alright - the cheese task made up for it.
I'm liking what they're doing with the show. It feels fresh and new and exciting, and after the last few seasons, I think it was time for an upgrade. |

Yeah, I know. I was being facetious about comparing last night's ratings to the "new TAR".
But still, there's a saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it". TAR didn't need fixing. |

No problem, Jiff, just making sure you weren't serious. Personally, I wasn't bothered by the changes we've seen so far, because I think they were
mostly cosmetic (other than dropping the race to LAX part of the show, which has been overdone in past seasons). Besides, I liked the new look to the flight
path graphics. Very Google Earth.
In the long run I think the show will still be edited to include the same formula that got them to this point, and it will still be the "old TAR" in terms of basic race format and editing structure. |

Very Google Earth. The fact they had the Google logo on-screen during those sequences probably helped give that impression. |

I know what it is that makes me feel meh about the new race. During the previous seasons, we raced WITH the teams. We were at the airport. We saw them fight,
we saw them struggle, we were there when Ari and Staella broke down along with their donkey. We were there when Fran and Barry walked past the clue a million
times.
But with this new season, it seems like we're just watching them race from afar, with the new graphics, the split screens, and especially with the two-second look-at-these-straggling-teams-performing-the-Roadblock part. We aren't racing anymore. =( |

I am complaining about the lack of robotic head turns this season.
I do like the new graphics, its more updated and the return of actual "clues" a la TAR 1.

When I saw the clue for the dam was a photo I was overjoyed, hopefully this keeps up.I don't really get that - I mean, all they did was show it to their taxi-driver and they took them to it. It didn't require any brainpower and may have been easier to show them a picture than pronouncing the name of the dam. Clues that actually involve working them out (like "travel to the Western-most point in Europe") = good Clues that just involve showing it to someone on the street who tells them where to go = bad |

I was overjoyed by the picture clue too. It was so reminiscent of season 1. ^_^

I liked the changes, and agree that often in the past there was too much time spent on getting to LAX. Also, since it starts in LA pretty much every season
now, why show the same thing basically over and over?
Some of the train stuff was kinda confusing, though. I think maybe I was distracted by the fact that there were new graphics/maps to actually notice what they said (like lines depicting the train rides etc). The cheese challenge was epic. |

I'd give the episode a 7/10.
Split screen HATE. Lack of rattlesnake noise HATE. Lack of Phil's spiel on "Can these people cope up with the stress of traveling together over 40,000 miles? Which team will come up with the right strategy? The right combination of brains, brawn and teamwork to win the 1 million dollars. These are the questions waiting to be answered, as we get ready to begin...... THE AMAZING RACE" HATE New theme music LOVE New logo LOVE New opening credits INDIFFERENCE (Lack of head turns to bitch about But definitely, the tasks LOVE. Though the episode was eerily fast-paced... |

I think I liked everything except I thought they could have shown a liiiiitle more airport time. And I DID miss Phil's traveling together spiel. And
obviously I miss the rattlesnakes, badly

I liked most of the changes, except this one:
New Theme Song: ABSOLUTE HATE And hopefully the quick-cut editing will be ratcheted down a notch or two. Other than that, I enjoyed it. I still miss Phil saying: "A Detour is a choice of two tasks, each with its own pros and cons". That's gone missing the last several seasons. The cheese bit was the funniest thing I've ever seen on the show, though. Comedy gold. |

I don't think the season openers of TAR are that good usually, I was pleasantly surprised with this one. The cheese challenge was reason enough to watch this episode, I love when people fall. |
