Well, essentially it is.

The show now is the original vision that was advertised in the 15 minute fundraising promo.

This is what the creators wanted this story to be. The Week 2 trailer has the original version tweaked slightly with classical music, etc.

The "mystery" seems planted artificially on top of the core of the story, so the mystery probably came about in rewrites.

Having Wakefield kill the most interesting characters sort of spits in the whole face of the idea of "mystery". The whole mystery is probably an add-on done for the network big wigs who were afraid of a pure slasher mini-series. No network executive was going to watch all 13 hours to see how it was tweaked. All the creators had to do was pop in a reworked episode 1. "See... It's now a mystery... Just like you wanted."

Exposition is the hardest thing to write and still be dramatically interesting. Episode 1 was probably overhauled so many times until it's unrecognizable. Who knows how many uncredited re-writers took a crack at the story to make it more mystery like.

As we get to the end of the story, which no one at the network was going to bother to sit through to get to the end of, we get to the purer version of the creators. This was probably the section that was re-written the least.

CBS and Paramount themselves could be upset for all we know, hence Karim's face-saving tweets. "Hey, you promised us a "mystery event"...."

The advertising shows us that someone on the creative team was not being straightforward with someone on the marketing team, or vice versa. Who knows what if any arguments have gone on between the powers behind this over how this should have been sold or who told what to whom.

The network has a reason to be pissed too. If the viewers don't think they can trust the advertising for new shows, it won't be effective in luring new viewers to their new programming. The last thing the networks want to do is piss off their declining viewer basis.

I'm still enjoying the show immensely. However, if they had left out the whole "25 suspects, 1 killer" marketing campaign and just stuck with the promo and trailer, I'd have less reason to feel tricked.

The origional promo had Madison saying, "The bad man told me..". No mystery there. At this point everybody knows there's a slasher on the loose. The Week 2 Trailer had Madison saying, "The spirits told me..." Viola. The illusion we have a mystery. Even so, the Week 2 Trailer ends with a screaming psycho in the tunnels.

Cookie, you're probably right. There I go again, wasting my time looking for murder mystery clues in a slasher film. So we've devolved from looking for "one killer", to the "main killer" to the "other killer" to "Wakefield's helper". How sad is that. I am just imagining Wakefield acting alone. The producer's rationalize, "we have one killer, only he is not one of the 25 suspects because he is supposed to be dead. Cool, huh...". (Gee, the long dead psycho-slasher turns out to be alive. Like THAT's never been done before.) Now the producers are scratching their heads. "I don't understand why they don't like our big twist." -- If that is Madison in the boat with Sully, and without Shea, then Shea is probably dead.
