He has a well sized fanbase and gets good work in both independent and studio films and has good acting chops. TDK was not about the Joker, it was about him, and the movie would have meant nothing without him.

That is pretty impressive considering 99% of box office draws are horror, romantic,lowbrow and family comedies,super hero movies,adaptations of well known books and plays,cgi animation,action adventure and sci fi films all of which neither 3:10 To Yuma or The Prestige fall into.
