CBS' finales of "Big Brother 5" and "Amazing Race 5" scored big on Tuesday night, helping the network hold off premieres on ABC and The WB as well as one big late-evening premiere on NBC.

Overall, CBS averaged a 7.7 rating/12 share to win the evening. NBC had a 6.6/11 for second and would have been even closer if not for the ratings disaster which is the third installment of "Last Comic Standing." ABC was a close third with a 6.4/10. The WB stepped up to grab fourth with a 3.8/8, topping the 3.4/6 for The WB. UPN did a 1.9/3 on the night.

CBS got an impressive 5.1 rating among adults 18-49 to win that advertiser-friendly demographic. NBC was second with a 3.8 rating, followed by ABC's 3.6 rating and the 2.4 rating for FOX. The WB was a respectable fifth with a 2.3 rating and UPN was last with a 1.2 rating.

CBS began the night on top as "Big Brother 5" closed its doors with a 6.7/11, with Drew Daniel taking the top prize. ABC was second with an hour of "My Wife and Kids," which did a 6.1/10. NBC was well off the pace with "Last Comic Standing," which nearly lost to the premiere of The WB's "Gilmore Girls," which had a 4.1/7. FOX was down in fifth with "Trading Spaces," which still beat the 1.8/3 averaged by the premieres of "All of Us" and "Eve" on UPN.

At 9 p.m., CBS took a commanding lead with the 8.0/12 for the first half of the "Amazing Race 5" finale. ABC's "According to Jim" (6.9/11) and "Rodney" (6.5/10) got off to respectable starts and beat the 5.9/9 averaged by "Father of the Pride" and "Scrubs" on NBC. The WB had a 3.4/5 for the season premiere of "One Tree Hill," which beat the pants off of FOX's "Next Great Champ." UPN's "Amish in the City" ended with a 2.1/3.

NBC grabbed the lead with the 10.0/17 premiere of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Chip and Kim won on "Amazing Race" as the finale improved slightly in its second hour and finished second. The beginning of the end of "NYPD Blue" did a 6.4/10 on ABC.

Solid 'Race' Makes NBC Tuesday 'Loser'

The second Tuesday of the November sweeps period saw a number of high profile premieres and special events and a down-to-the-wire finish between NBC and CBS. Both networks were able to claim some measure of victory for the night.

Overall, CBS averaged an 8.2 rating/13 share, edging the 8.1/13 for hard-charging NBC. ABC was a solid second with a 6.1/9. FOX was well back in fourth with a 4.1/8, edging The WB and UPN which both posted the same respectable 3.4/5.


NBC grabbed the demographic crown for the night, doing a 5.0 rating among adults 18-49. CBS was a close second with a 4.5 rating, followed by the 3.4 rating for ABC. FOX's 2.5 rating and the 2.3 rating for The WB followed, while UPN was right behind with a 2.2 rating.

CBS began the night on top with a 9.5/15 for "NCIS." The competition was well back, with NBC taking second with the 6.4/10 for the first hour of "The Biggest Loser," leaving ABC in third with "My Wife and Kids" and "George Lopez." The WB's "Gilmore Girls" finished fourth with a 3.9/6, topping the 3.5/5 for FOX's "Rebel Billionaire." UPN wasn't far off that pace with the telecast of the Vibe Awards.

The first hour of the new season of "The Amazing Race" premiered to a 7.3/11 at 9 p.m. for CBS. NBC was a close second with the conclusion of "Biggest Loser" and "Scrubs." Third went to ABC, which averaged a 6.7/10 between "According to Jim" and "Rodney." Given the awful lead-in, FOX's acclaimed medical drama "House" had a respectable first outing with a 4.7/7. UPN moved up to fifth with the 3.7/6 for the Vibe Awards, easily beating "One Tree Hill" on The WB.

NBC moved into the lead for the 10 p.m. hour, as "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" posted an impressive 11.1/18. The second hour of "Amazing Race" did a 7.5/12 to keep CBS in second. On ABC, "NYPD Blue" had a 6.1/10.
