SINGAPORE: More people were hurt or killed as a result of violent crime here last year, in particular, rape.Overall, there were 4,354 cases involving violence reported, compared to 4,113 in 2007. Crimes that fall under this category include murder, rape, and those committed using force. Rape cases shot up to 109 from 72 in 2007. According to the police, there was a sharp rise in girls below the age of 16 having anal sex, with 310 cases last year compared to 216 the year before, a trend that the police have cited as "worrying."
Statutory rape, which involves those below 14, jumped from 57 cases to 63 last year. Carnal connection, which involves girls below the age of 16 having sex, leapt from 159 to 247 cases. Top on the police's priority list is curbing the rising number of females engaging in underaged sex. "Teenagers these days are bolder and want to be seen by their peers as experienced and worldly-wise. They don't realise how great the repercussions of their actions are," Clinical psychologist Dr Carol Balhetchet said. "Not only will girls have to cope with teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, the boys involved will also have their futures (tainted) by a criminal record."
Murder cases also spiked, from 18 to 26. At least 10 of the victims were foreigners. Four of the murders still remain unsolved, including October's
high-profile murder at Flanders Square in Little India, when a Malaysian prostitute was stabbed. -- ANN/CNN
Article 2:
SINGAPORE: A 16-year-old girl instigated an unknown man to rape a girl who had bad-mouthed her previously. When the rape failed, Nor Azura Omar forced the
13-year-old girl to have oral sex with the man and even recorded the obscene act with her cellphone.
All this took place at a staircase landing of a block of flats in Woodlands on June 28 last year. A district court heard that Azura had planned to "break
the virginity" of the girl and wanted to take revenge on her for having badmouthed her previously. She called a chatline and managed to arrange for the
unknown man to meet her at a block of flats in Woodlands Avenue 1.
Over the phone, she told him to "break" the victim's virginity. The victim overheard this but was afraid to make an escape as she feared that
Azura would beat her up, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Diane Tan.
Initially, Azura's accomplices, all between 12 and 15, did not know about her plan. Surrounded by Azura and the group, the victim was forced to lie down on
the ground. She then instigated the man to rape her but he failed.
Unhappy, Azura forced the victim to perform oral sex on the man. After the man, who is at large and is presumed to be having anal sex somewhere, had left,
Azura remained unhappy that her plan did not materialise. She felt that the victim had not learnt her lesson. The DPP said she then slapped and kicked the
victim, who was also attacked by the rest of the group. After inflicting group violence, Azura decided to humiliate the victim further by forcefully stripping
her of her shirt and bra, exposing her breasts to public view.
On Friday, Azura admitted to five charges including one of misappropriating her friend's bag on July 24. Community Court judge May Mesenas called for a
reformative training report on Azura before deciding what to do on Feb 20. She also wanted a psychological assessment on Azura's risk of re-offending. --
