Right now I have a secondary VCR hooked up to cable in the basement. It quit respnding to its remote controller a couple of years ago, so I can't set the timer to record when I want to. That's why it is the "secondary VCR." I use it when I'm watching one show and want to record something else at the same time. I turn it on, select the channel on the VCR, insert a tape, and press REC. Then I come back later and retrieve the tape. From what I've read on the WEB about this conversion, I don't think the tuner in the VCR will continue to work because it is analog and the signal will only be digital. Right now, Comcast is broadcasting digital and analog, but it will drop the anolog signal after the conversion. Anybody have any useful suggestions? FOAD is not useful.

If you're still using cable, you should still be able to get a signal regardless of the age of your TV and VCR. If you want to continue the practice of watching one show while recording another, you'll need to connect a signal splitter near where the cable comes through your wall. From the "out" side, you will connect one wire to your VCR, and one to your TV. I'm currently doing that with the 7-year old analog TV and a 9-year old analog VCR in my basement, and I can watch one show just fine while recording another on Comcast. Unless of course you've got some kind of fancy-shmancy signal from Comcast that we don't have here?

According to Comcast, we don't have to do anything. I'm not sure what you're reading/hearing, or where. If you have Comcast Cable, you're ready already for the Digital Transition. If all your TVs are currently connected to Comcast, you don't have to worry about a thing. When February 17, 2009 rolls around, you can just sit back, relax and keep watching your favorite shows. http://www.comcast.com/dtv/currentcustomer.html

I know this doesn't actually pertain to the question you asked but I saw on HSN or QVC (I can't remember which one) but they had a VCR upconverter. Why would someone even make that? However, do you pay for your television or do you get it free via rabbit ears or rooftop antenna?

My sister and I set up a converter box on the non-digital bedroom TV but we are stymied by their main TV. It's digital so that's good but they have a VCR hooked up to it that is not. We're not sure that a digital VCR actually exists. At least we can't find one anywhere. I wish we could convince them to switch to AT&T Universe or whatever that thing is. We even told them we'd pay for it. That would make life so much easier.

If you have cable or satellite, you shouldn't be affected. The only ones that should be affected are the 70 year old ladies that watch their "stories" on their Zenith console TV's using rabbit ears.

We even told them we'd pay for it. That would make life so much easier. There are DVD Recorder / VCR combos with ATSC digital tuners. Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, Phillips possibly others. (Recent reports I've read say some LG and JVC models have problems recording from digital cable, due to CRPM / Copyright Rights Protection issues on some cable broadcasts, which prevent recording.) But why would anyone want to replace a VCR with (perish the thought) a VCR? Why not a DVR or a DVD Recorder with an ATSC digital tuner? Last Edited By: SurvivorLDog93 01/26/09 8:32 PM. I believe there's one on the market that has a little infrared mouse that will tell the VCR when to turn recording on and off so you program it through the converter box. Or get them a DVR but keep the VCR hooked up to play only. But as noted above it's almost a certainty now that this will get pushed back until June.
