2. Trish Wellington
"the Bride" "the RAWBED true Final Girl" 
In any other show Trish would have EASILY been my favo the entire time, but HI raised the bar with my beloved number 1, who I will get to below. Trish is glorious in all ways: she's glam, she's sensitive but tough, she's rich, she's gorgeous, she's a true ride or die chick, etc. Trish's relationship with her father, her sister, her niece, her fiance and her friends gave some of the best moments on the show and she was easily twenty to thirty times as interesting as the generic and hate-worthy Henry and Abby. One of Trish's best qualities is her ability to pick friends, as demonstrated by her badass bridesmaids Chloe, Lucy and Beth, all of whom are fucking awesome in their own way. Sadly the bridesmaids were CRUELLY ignored in favor of Henry's boretastic groomsmen, who totally sucked story wise. I can only imagine the relationship these four women had but they all need to come back to life to have their own HI spin off:

But even tho Trish was a gorg rich girl who was only friends with fellow gorg rich girls, she was not stuck up. She was very friendly to homely poor borewhore Abby and even got engaged to a dweeby lowly fishertwat. And that was ultimately her undoing. You heard it here first people: snobbery saves lives. In fact I would say not being shallow and exclusive enough was Trish's only problem really. She should have just left with soulless beefcake Hunter when she had the chance and never looked back. |

2nd. Beth Barrington
"The Single Girl" "The Robbed of Survival" 
Beth was the best thing on this show. I wish she lived, but borewhore Abby was too much important to Henry to let the cool kids survive. Beth was UTR her whole time she was alive. I bet if she just lived that one episode, she would have became OTTP. But, Wakefield can't make my dreams happen. I bet most of the cast didn't even know that there was a Beth in the cast. I bet Beth didn't even know. I guess Beth was too busy going to the spa, spa, spa to be important. Other than that, I loved Beth, and wish that she really didn't die. Maybe her bottom half and left arm is still somewhere with GiGi. Beth was clearly better than most of the cast. So, I don't really have to say much more. |

#2: Chloe Carter
I knew that when I got down to these two, picking a number one character would be extremely difficult. I mean, they both have a ton of pros and not many cons, so when it came down to it, my decision was based on whose death made me feel sadder. While Chloe's death was fucking AMAZING and is probably one of the most well-scripted scenes in the show, her death just didn't move me like Cal's did. But Chloe was still an amazing character and really puts every other woman in the cast to shame. She wasn't invisible like most of the women, and she wasn't shoved down our throats like Madison, Trish or Abby. She was the perfect combination. Our first introduction to Chloe was that she was into serial killers, which is fucking weird in and of itself, even though it really didn't matter in the long run. She and Cal basically came into the show as an alternative couple to the boring Trish/Henry couple or the "perfect" Abby/Jimmy duo. And she started off the show by pretending to drown Cal and then throwing his clothes into the water, costing him the ring he was planning to propose to her with. They made up and a few days later teamed up to pull a prank on Sully at the spa. Chloe's best moment was when she totally owned some random redneck, saying she was pregnant with his baby so she could get back the ring that he'd found on the beach. She totally destroyed some guy's relationship, all for a ring, which is hilarious. Then Chloe and Cal basically fucked...A LOT. Like, she even suggested she and Cal fuck when a serial killer was on the loose and they were supposed to be watching the injured Sheriff. All in all, Chloe always seemed to be one of the people that actually seemed to be thinking reasonably. She kept a list of who was missing, she knew what was wrong with Wakefield in the head. I guess Wakefield must've found the whole "into serial killers" thing hot, 'cause he kidnapped her held her hostage (and didn't seem like he was going to kill her anyway.) Sadly, she didn't try to help Cal when Wakefield was killing him, but she made up for it with a beautiful death scene, throwing herself off a bridge. She was so close to the best character in the cast, but sadly, she just wasn't as good as...

#1: Cal Vandeusen
Yeah, there's no real question that Cal was the best character in the show. He was the true hero in the cast, because Henry turned out to be the killer, Jimmy was the boring, hero archetype, and Cal was the more realistic hero. His outsider status in the wedding party helped to make him more interesting because he wasn't really a strong part of the shitty wedding subplot. He's just a very nice and funny guy, and it wasn't until halfway through the show that I realized he was the guy from Epic Movie. He started out as this awkward little dork who wanted to propose to Chloe, but he couldn't work up the courage until he had his pants thrown into the water, losing the ring in the process. Already upset with that, he had to contend with first Uncle Marty, then Sully trying to mack on Cal's woman, which led to him being sent to the blue team with boring Abby, Lucy, and douchebag Richard. He got hung in a snare for a whole day while Sully was trying to score with his girlfriend, but he got revenge with the tarring and feathering prank. From then on, Cal continued to be awkwardly nerdy when he tried to get his ring back and failed, and then took Chloe boating while the wedding rehearsal was "interrupted". He finally got to show off his medical knowledge after that when he first identified the incinerator skull as being "not that of a child" and then he managed to patch the Sheriff up well enough that he wouldn't die (from his wounds). Cal also started to show his heroic side when he refused to get on the boat and escape with Sully, Beth and Chloe, and even managed to get Chloe off (the ship, you perverts) as well. He managed to get laid at least three times during the course of the show, I believe, which is great, given his partner was hot Chloe. And he became more heroic when he took a bullet to the arm while trying to rescue everyone. I still think that the producers specifically cast a British guy as Cal so they could use the whole "going to the wrong side of the car" scene. He talked Sully through removing the bullet and then he risked everything to save Chloe after she was kidnapped by Wakefield. He got her free and managed to propose before Wakefield attacked. With no bullets, Cal & Chloe ran onto the bridge and reached a dead end, where Cal fought off Wakefield as long as he could so Chloe could survive. It was really the saddest death of the show, because he was fighting for the woman he loved, and Cal will forever be missed. |

In a ~shocking twist~, the person in my avatar is number one in this ranking =O
Chloe was by far my favorite person on HI and one of my favorite characters on a scripted show in recent memory. She's so beloved that I expect to soon see backlash against her a la other megastars Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, Justin Timberlake, etc. Chloe embodies everything I appreciate about female characters on tv. She's sexy, gorgeous, fun, loyal, smart and a bit quirky. I knew from the instant she was described as "the Flirt" that a) she would not live and b) I would like her. But then when the show debuted and it was revealed that Chloe was also a twisted girl with an obsession with serial killers AND a fiercely devoted girlfriend to Cal (even in the face of sexy flaxen haired Sully tempting her) and bff to Trish (even tho Trish was Chloe's only competition as hottest girl), and all of this combined just made me absolutely love her. I miss her ~sass~ and I wish that she and Cal had lived/and or been the killers, but they got the next best thing: a heartbreaking musical montage death.
Ugh I just cannot deal with that
Chloe's death was the best in the show imo as she was like "fuck you" and killed herself.
But let's not dwell on that awfulness and just pretend Chloe made it out alive and is now living happily with her fiance Cal as they plan their non-pacific northwest wedding extravaganza. 
SUCH an HBIC.

Totally the stars of Harper's Island. The second half of the finale was so boring once Trish died...truly no one to root for. I didn't know
whether I'd rather Abby kill Henry for killing Trish or Henry kill Abby for being such a boring bitch.
I'm definitely gonna buy the DVD set, which I never really would do for a show I'd already watched. I just got that into HI. CBS is still fucking dumb for not letting this gain an audience during the summer, when all they air are repeats anyways. HI definitely attracted a younger viewing audience that just doesn't watch it on Saturday. Also a more tech-savvy audience that is going to search out the Canadian episodes online instead of waiting three days. Such a clusterfuck by CBS. |
