I probably wouldn't have thought much about it if I hadn't already known it was a true story. I've only skimmed through the book, but I just feel so sad for Bobby. I can't imagine going through what he did.

I just finished the book. Obviously, there's more detail than in the movie. There's a lot of exploration on Mary's life before marriage and after Bobby's death. And, a couple details are juxtaposed in the movie, but there are some really interesting things. I don't think the movie does justice to the pain Bobby was feeling, even though some of his journal entries are told in the movie. There was so much self-hatred and anger. He was also a lot more promiscuous. That wasn't explored in the movie, and a lot of it played into his self-hatred. He was really torn between being himself and feeling guilty for being himself. His oldest sister, Joy, was also a bigger part of his life (in the span of the movie) than the movie portrays. And, this is the thing that confuses me and angers me the most. There is no David (or person with a different name). Bobby never really had a serious relationship. There was no phone call before he committed suicide, hoping David was there. It bothers me that they had to Hollywood it up like that. The story is plenty good without anything added.
