A great day for Idol? NIGEL HAS QUIT!

After watching a few seasons of Dance I've wondered how much of Idol's problems are actually Nigel. He was involved with Seasons 1 & 2 before they became huge and those seasons were very entertaining and the song choices were pretty decent as were the themes for each week, Seasons 4 and 5 were also good in terms of song selection and themes. The only two totally shit seasons I can recall are 3 and 6 and that had more to do with the caliber of contestants than anything going on behind the scenes. At least IMO.

Those fuckers pimped Twitch like it was nobody's business. Every boot up until the Top 10 was so obvious because you knew exactly who they wanted in the 10 because of their comments and you knew who they'd eliminated. With the exception of Jessicer that was their 10.

Did you watch this season? yes! but at the time I made my post I was forgetting Will! I was reminded last night during the finale how ridiculous their obvious pimping of him was. I didn't think they overly pimped Twitch. I thought he got some remarks that showed he wasn't always on point. I do think they favored him because they enjoyed his free style of dancing but IMO they were much more impressed with Joshua and Catee as a couple and individually and it showed because they got zero negative remarks, regardless of who they were partnered with...that could also be because they were the two best dancers on the show this year! Lying through their teeth? in what regard? It was obvious who they were going to boot, I'll give you that. But I never disagreed with their choices personally. I think they came away with the best group of 10 possible with the choices they made.

Well for one thing with all this "untrained" bullshit in regards to Twitch and Joshua. They'd go on and on about how they had no training and they were street dancers and how they shouldn't be able to do this. They pretty much ignored the fact that everyone else was forced to dance styles other than their own. They didn't make nearly as big a deal when a ballroom dancer like Chelsie or a contemporary dancer would do Hip-Hop. Also with a lot of the positive remarks they made about Twitch when he wasn't doing Hip-Hop, they were quick to point out flaws when other people danced but not Twitch. Will was obviously the most pimped, and Joshua and Katee were also pimped but the pimping of Twitch was the most absurd and off base to me. They also wouldn't give certain contestants fair praise for their effort and things they did well and it was painful to watch because it was so obvious they were lying and someone like Courtney or Mark deserved more credit. Also they way they spoke to Jessica annoyed me. I didn't at all like her but I thought they were very rude to her. Always talking about how much of a god Will was and how it was so awful that he had to be partnered with him because she was shit and brought him down. It may or may not have been true but they way they went about belittling her wasn't right. If Will had been a better partner and it wasn't all about him and how amazing he is perhaps she could have done better. I bet if she wasn't partnered with someone like Joshua or Mark she would have done a lot better.

I didn't get the whole "untrained" dancer aspect either except insomuch as neither Twitch nor Joshua to my knowledge ever studied for YEARS like the majority of the dancers on the program. I remember them praising Kerrington and Chelsia both for their hip hop routines, I also recall them praising Courtney, Mark, and many others for working outside their genres. However, IMO it's a lot harder to go from being a street dancer to ballroom/contemporary than it is to go from ballroom/contemporary to street. I thought Chelsia should've been top 4 before Courtney, who I found to be a very sloppy dancer. The only great routine I remember from Coutney was The Garden with Mark, otherwise I wasn't ever impressed with her. I always found their remarks to be tempered with praise and criticisim for almost all the contestants, with the exception of Will, Catee and Joshua who never, to my memory, received a negative remark. I do remember, I believe it was Mia Michaels (who is a brilliant choreographer but obviously a complete BITCH), making the comment that Will must be tired from carrying Jessica throughout the competition but I don't remember Mary OR Nigel ever making a comment to that effect towards her. And in spite of all of our lambasting of Nigel, it is currently an unanswerable one. Most of us have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of what's happened onscreen during the 7 seasons of Idol, and we can name a few production people like Debra Byrd, but the bottom line is that we really don't know squat about the actual production dynamics, and who really runs what. Did Nigel really pick the uninspired theme weeks, or was it Clive? Or was it somebody at FOX whose name we've never heard of? Who is it on the show that hates all post-70s (or post mid 80s) music? And so on. The 8th season may give us some answers, but anybody now expecting to see Rap Night, Nirvana Night, and so on is likely to be disappointed.

Yeah, I am not so quick to blame the theme nights/music on AI on Nigel. While I generally prefer older music anyway, I do love that SYTYCD introduces us to whats current today. I never would have heard of Mercy by Duffy or The Garden from Mirah if not for this show, so it seems weird to me that he would have one show that really focuses heavily on todays music while the other show is strictly older stuff. He obviously has a lot more pull on SYTYCD as it's his baby, but AI? I am not so sure he has as much say.
