Syesha MerKIBBIN next week? | ||

I didn't vote for Syesha very much last night (I concentrated on saving Carly) but I guess even the occasional call over a 2 hour period helped. I am
amazed KKKristy went instead of Brooke though. Anyway, Syesha now has 4 bottom three survivals, enough to tie her for second place all-time (behind Nikki, of
course). If she can survive the bottom 2 next week and send Brooke (?) home she can tie the record. To do it she will need a) the right song; b) another sexy
outfit; and c) not to scream so much and scare away casual fans like me.

Since I complained last week with Michael, it's only fair I say I thought the whole bottom three switch was stupid and pointless and insulting. Of any
times for Syesha to have one of her diva reactions, that would have been the one, but I thought she handled herself well.

She'll be safe again next week since she's most likely getting the pimp spot (her and Carly haven't gotten it yet in the top 12). The token black
girl trend in the top 5 lives on!

I don't think the 3 (okay, 2 1/2 to be exact) black girls in the top 5 (and 4) of last year were a "token."

^ I agree - I think they were the best out of a mediocre bunch.
But Syesha doesn't even come close to Lakesha, Melinda, and Jordin in terms of personality and talent. Dude, even Melinda owns her. There's no reason for her to be in the top 5. But I'm not sure if her votes are as ethnically linked as Jasmine's were, for example. |

As I sit here in the posh bedroom of my luxury condominium, I am downloading some performances to play on my top of the line ipod through my Bose surround
sound speaker system. And I realize that I now have not one, not two, but THREE Syesha Mercado quality recordings downloaded. SYESHAOWNAGE!!! <3

People on Sucks just don't get Syesha and don't know why she hasn't been voted off. Since I seem to be the closest thing here to a genuine fan of
hers, I'll give it a shot. First, let's remember that about 15-20% of AI's audience is black. But there's virtually no blacks on Sucks, so we
are NOT typical of the show's viewing audience in that regard. That's no big deal (blacks aren't on the internet much, period) but people
shouldn't forget how it skews our preferences. Anyway, as the only black women in the finals, it's statistically no surprise she's still around.
Besides having 3 black winners , AI has never had an all-white top 6 (or 5). And as a beautiful, busty woman who knows how to dress (in a year when the other
women are mostly 0 for 3 in these areas), she's surely attracted a decent number of heterosexual white males as casual supporters also. Me, for one.
Now onto Syesha's singing. She's basically an average quality R&B Idol singer. Her big high notes are screechy as hell, but she can at least DO them (bye Michael), and her lower register is fine (Me & Mr. Jones, Yesterday). She also has decent dynamics, switching smoothly from soft to loud. She hasn't done anything amazing in this regard (I for one would like to see her try to switch BACK to soft sometime), and probably can't, but she hasn't had a trainwreck either. In short, she's not really much if any worse than Trenyce or Vonzell, the singers she musically resembles the most. Vonzell was far more likable, but she really wasn't a great singer either. So given Syesha's solid fanbase, all she had to do to get from top 10 to top 6 is be okay. Which she has. And she's had some good performances as well. I can think of nights when she was AMONG the worst singers (Got To Get You Into My Life, I Believe) but no night when she was definitely THE worst. The bottom line is that Syesha will be gone soon. This is no tragedy, though I do think she deserves to outlast Brooke. Hopefully, this explanation will help to clarify her appeal somewhat. |
