TAR 8 on GSN |
Lead | |
|
I know most of you have been here from the beginning and have seen all the seasons when they originally aired. There are a handfull of us that came late to the game. I am watching TAR 8 for the first time on GSN. I'm starting this thread as a sort of very mini-forum within a forum for anyone to discuss TAR 8.
First episode tonight! |

I wasn't initially opposed to the Family edition -- either the kids or staying in the US. But my opinion is/was that if you are going to stay in the US, the tasks and locations need to be kick ass. Sadly, they weren't. The only reason to tune in was to see what crazy ass thing the Weavers might do next. |

I'm sure a few people will tune in to see there favorite Mama Weaver get ran over by a cart or w/e the hell that thing was.

I thought the teams were very interesting and the interactions. The Weaver family gave us some very funny moments along with the Paolo's. The tasks were kinda lame, but the families themselves made up for the season.
Still wished the Bransen's won |

I didn't like the idea of lame tasks. "Climb the world's largest office chair to find your next clue." Actually, that one was kind of funny, but the others were boring. I'll probably watch just because I like the TAR. What time is it on?

Re: TAR8 | ||

The tasks weren't much worse than in TAR7 - most of the time I'd say they were better. If there was more variety in the locations and fewer tasks of the zero skill NASA/flight plane ones, I would have liked it a lot more.
Also, having only 10 teams to start with, then 3 episodes near the end with the same teams (NEL, TBC, Elim) made it drag a lot more than it needed to. The fact the NELs went to the least fun to watch teams didn't help either. |

The first 2.5 episodes are actually quite good. Unfortunately it's all pretty much downhill after that.
They could've done an entertaining family edition. They could've done an entertaining US-centric version. Hell, they could've even done an entertaining family, US-centric version. But they came nowhere close to pulling it off. Casting was superb except for the Linzes but the route was boring as hell with repetitivie tasks. There are five straight legs in the mountains/desert of Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. Booooring. |

Re: TAR8 | ||

Watch until the Paolos are eliminated. There's plenty of Weaver Family hysterics after that, which is quite painful to the eyes and ears, and not much else worth noting.

Re: TAR8 | ||

I will still be one of the few people that thoroughly enjoyed TAR8, and I definitely enjoyed a helluva lot more than TAR7.
The teams were awesome, it was interesting seeing parts of the country I've never seen before, and the Linzes are still the only winners I rooted for from the beginning. But yeah, the best episodes were the first 2 and then the finale. The Civil War detour alone was amazing. |

Re: TAR8 | ||
Quote: It seemed like they really blew the budget on a few really lavish tasks, then tried to get away with some really cheap ones elsewhere. I felt the same thing about TAR4 (lavish Venice balls once, then about eight straight weeks of shitty "carry this heavy object" tasks). None of the tasks were as lame as "open some random metal boxes" or "chop onions" though. |

The civil war battle was the coolest thing we did. The battle scene's director for the movie Cold Mountain directed it. He made sure the battle was historically correct and worked on it for over three months. They hired over 100 men who are involved with groups that do that kind of thing on the weekend. At the pitstop we got to have a big bbq and a chance to speak with the director and hang out with the men from the battle. I would have never thought Carissa would think this was real but during the battle she asks Billy how come we are not getting shot. For as much crap as people said about her she was willing to go into battle and take a bullet for her team. They edited to make it look like she says it on the way to the battle so people wouln't freak out I'm sure. When we went through our safety speech I made the kids wear earplugs and told them to stay away from the flags so they wouldn't get run over never thinking she wouldn't think they were using blanks.

Quote: I know. Well, the Bransens had one (same ep as Mama Paolo rushing to put all her clothes on before they saw another team come in) but yeah, the Aiellos and Schroeders would have been a lot more fun to watch in those later episodes, to combat the Weavers--Bransens were too nice and the Linzes too dull. TAR8 was the first season that I was around in this forum before it started, and I just remember even before we had the cast, everyone here basically could tell right from the get-go that it was a terrible idea. Then we got the cast and were surprised by teams like the Aiellos, because everyone was imagining it would be all teams with little kids and parents. Maybe it wasn't going to be so bad after all. And then the Gaghan fans came in full force with their big, colorful fonts. ;) |

Re: TAR8 | ||

Yeah, when Phil first said on The Early Show that it was going to be a family edition, I was absolutely pissed off. I was ready to hate it long before it premiered.
But I would never turn my back on TAR, so I watched the premiere anyway and I was shocked to find myself actually enjoying it. And it turned out that I enjoyed the whole season. I'm more inclined to watch my TAR8 tapes over TAR7, TAR4, TAR9, or TAR10. |

Re: TAR8 | ||
Quote: I actually thought the Rogers were the biggest loss. Denny seemed like he'd be a fun Lake/Ian figure - he and Brock could have added a lot. Losing the two teams with father-son dynamics hurt the diversity a lot (Gaghan editing focused on Carissa, Paolo editing focused on Mama), given how rarely we've seen them across all 11 seasons. Even with the course, I could have loved TAR8 more than most modern seasons if the 2 siblings teams (i.e. the ones with exactly the same generic dynamics as a regular season) didn't make the Final 4 (and as much as I liked the Bransens, they could have really been a two person team as all the girls blended together). It was a nice change from the all couple Final 5s of TAR6 and TAR7, though. |

I didn't mind it. I was not a fan of the Gaghan kids though. Jsut too, too precocious. Losing the Rogers and the Aiellos were big losses IMO but I did love the F3. The Bransens were sweet, the Weavers a fantastic trainwreck and the Linzs were fun. I didn't find them boring at all.

The tasks and route of TAR8 sucked (except for the civil war task and Mama Weaver and the buggy). The teams were great though.

Re: TAR8 | ||

I'm probably the only one here who was glad that the Aiellos left. I disliked after one of the men complained that MaWeaver ignored them when they were trying to fish for info.
The Weavers and the Paolos made this season. |

I've never seen the first few episodes of season 8, and I'd like to watch it, but my GSN listings show them airing the season 6 premier tonight. I'm confused? :/

Do you think that the Weaver Family could be killed off in this rerun? Now that would make it worthwhile watching again.

Re: TAR8 | ||
Quote:Yeah that was the most boring stretch of episodes in TAR history. I usually have a clear memory of individual legs through the seasons but those ones were one endless visit to some place called Huber City or something and a lot of cows or horses and it was just a complete blur of nothingness. The horror! The horror! And I don't think they could have made an entertaining family version period because that implies more than 2 people and even at three people let alone four, everyone was talking over everyone else, SUV spoon fed vehicles were used to squeeze everyone in and it just doesn't work. The whole format was wrong. My generic imaginary poster of that season is of the inside of some SUV crammed with people I can't remember the names of making a wall of useless noise taking the place of a conversation. I want a race around the world. This wasn't. If non-Americans spent an episode or two in the US in a race around the world, fine. Otherwise, no. It sucked except for Panama and Costa Rica and the Paolos who rocked those legs. |
