What/Who motivates you to be so soulful whenever you're singing?
Anoop Desai: It's just sort of the type of music that I like listening to. I've always tried to emmulate Boyz II Men and sort of the early '90s R&B groups that I grew up with. But for me it's about conveying emotion when you sing. I think that's the most important thing about singing. I just try to do that every time I get on stage.

Have you started thinking about or writing songs?
Anoop Desai: I've started thinking about songs. I was never really a writer, and so for me it's sort of beginning to write and co-write. And just seeing where that takes me. I think that's going to be an important element of my career and my future. I'm sort of getting started now.

Were you always interested in being a singer as a kid?
Anoop Desai: As a kid, it was just something that I enjoyed doing and gradually I realized I was pretty good at it. But it was never by career path until I got to college. that's when I realized it's what I have fun doing and what I do the best. That's when I took a real interest, when I was in the Clef Hangers at UNC.

All the girls want to know, what qualities do you look for in a girlfriend? (because apparently all the Idols get asked this question)
Anoop Desai: Someone that makes me laugh, and sort of has a very similar sense a humor to mine. Someone that's smart, obviously someone that's good looking... I don't know. It really depends on the person. I don't think I really have a type, the people I'm generally to are people first.

What was you favorite memory of being on Idol this year?
Anoop Desai: Probably singing "Always On my Mind" after I sang "Beat It" and having Simon eat his negative comments from the week before... that was a really good moment for me.

How tall are you?
Anoop Desai: I'm about 6-1

Ever thought about acting?
Anoop Desai: I did a lot of acting in high school and it's certainly something that I'm interested in. But, you know, I love music more than anything else in the world. It's music first, but I would love to act. That would be cool.

Give us some hints about what's coming up on tour. What should we look forward to?
Anoop Desai: I'm not actually sure I can do that. There aren't a ton of group numbers, so you're definitely going to see a lot of solo time from your favorite, which I think it really cool because you're not buying a group CD when we're through with this. You want to see the person you voted for and going to buy their CD afterward. But it's going to be an amazing show.

What genres are you going to put on your album?
Anoop Desai: I like and I listen to Pop R&B. The Ne-Yo, Chris Brown sound -- Chris Brown SOUND -- because I love pop music and the Ne-Yo soul thing. I think it's going to be a well-rounded album that I'll hopefully put out, but one that's very influenced by R&B and pop music.

What was your favorite performance and why?
Anoop Desai: My favorite performance was probably "Ooh, Baby Baby." I really enjoyed singing that because Smokey was there in the audience and it's a classic song and I could really get into it. it's a beautifully written song, so to have the opportunity to do that was awesome.

Had you not auditioned for AI, what career path do you think you would have pursued?
Anoop Desai: I would probably be in grad school getting my Master's right now and looking forward to law school or getting my doctorate in something. That's the thing. When I auditioned for Idol I was in grad school but kind of unsure of the specifics, so I'm glad this happened.

Which other American Idol season 8 contestant would you most like to collaborate with?
Anoop Desai: That's an interesting one. Maybe... I don't know... I think it would be pretty cool to collaborate with Adam because I think we're completely different, and I think that could only lead to good things, normally. I'm trying to hear that in my head and maybe I'll talk to him about after this chat, actually.

How much "coaching" was involved behind the scenes to prepare you?
Anoop Desai: A lot. Our vocal coaches at the show were amazing and they helped us unlock our potential. A lot of it, too, was just learning the competition, how to play the game. I tried to do that, unfortunately it didn't quite work. But the coaching was incredible.

Thanks for the post & link. I am still a fan and Anoop is the one I most look forward to release of an album and whenever I see this thread I hope to open it up and find out he's signed. It saddens me to think that he may be overlooked. IMO Anoop & Adam were the best of this season by a mile and an Anoop/Adam collaboration would be great. I'd love to see what kind of a duet they would do together.
