I think the bisexual Kira/Intendant angle was the draw for most of those fans. Not a lot of plot discussion going on in those script meetings, I would imagine. It's more like, "We finally have a way to bring Bareil back! Except now he's an asshole, and completely unattractive and uninteresting as a love interest for Nerys."

So what you're basically saying is that fans of Star Trek TOS are hoping on a subconscious level (and others outright) that a homosexual relationship between Kirk/Spock develops, or has already developed between them in the past, and will be revealed in the upcoming film? Being one of the significant number of fans that you mentioned, I have absolutely no need whatsoever to know this.
