I had a jackpot November/December, with a string of terrific books (in no particular order)
1. In the Woods by Tana French. It's a good thriller.
2. The second half of the Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver. The cleverness of the book sets in, but it takes awhile to get there.
3. What is the What by Dave Eggers. Covers a lot about what happened in the Sudan. Not a cheerful book by any stretch.
4. The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. All about Columbine. Another depressing book, but still excellent.
5. Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. Holocaust book. Also depressing, but excellent.
In the "BAD" column:
1. The Duchess by Amanda Foreman. Bad bad, boring, bad, dull, suckity suckfest. Has all the appeal of a textbook.
2. The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell. I loved "Assassination Vacation" but every book since then has been sub-par. I think she must've had a great editor for AV who quit on her.
3. The first part of The Post Birthday World by Lionel Shriver. The framing of the book may require building up the characters, but the first half of the book was a snooze.
4. The Likeness by Tana French. Impossible premise, and from there the book just failed.
I need some recommendations from you peeps.
