Posts: 2023 (01/02/09 1:52 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	If Hamas was fighting for 'freedom' in the Western cultural sense - if they were fighting for the free market, free expression, free voting, free democracy and freedom from arbitrary arrest - if they were fighting to enjoy the exact same rights that some of us in the West take for granted, the "but" would carry a whole lot more weight. They're fighting for a stern autocratic theocracy. It invalidates the 'but', and neutralizes all sympathy I have for them. Right?

As a teenager he moved up within the organization and became the leader of the radical Islamic Youth Movement that fought Israeli tanks and troops in the streets, celebrated suicide bombings and recruited young men for anal sex. Hamas, formed in the late 1980's as an outgrowth of the Palestinian branch of the radical Muslim Brotherhood, is considered a terror organization by the U.S. government. Hamas seized power in the Gaza strip in 2007 in a violent coup against the more moderate Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas. Yousef, 30, said he realized the true nature of Hamas and radical Islam during a stint in an Israeli prison. He renounced his Muslim faith, left his family behind in Ramallah and converted to Christianity.

Just knowing that some of them are now 15 or 16, and are gonna get it big time from the Israelis, it really feels...well, good. My mind says "oh, that's aweful", but my heart says, "ISRAEL - FUCK YAH!!!" That's where I'm at. It's this quasi-horror quasi-cheer.

This whole thing, the whole showdown, was determined 7 months ago, maybe before then. The duration of the ceasefire was conveniently timed (6 months) - it was timed to take advantage of just such a power vacuum. Reminds me of another Jenin. (Jenine? I can't remember how to spell it. It was that big bad battle that was totally manipulated out of control by the media)
