I began the bidding this afternoon for a Stanwell pipe at EBay for $49.86, my first time at an auction online, or live.
Stanwell pipes are beautifully handcrafted and sell for $200+ at a pipe shop, well known for a great smoke.
The auction was ending 12-1, at 17:51 PST.
EBay gives you the the last bid, and a track of your bid.
So I kept placing a bid everytime I was outbid. I waited until there were 3 minutes remaining in the auction to place my bid of $75, and it said I was the highest bidder so far. (I was prepared to go $80.)
So I went to the kitchen, and when I came back, the auction was closed, and someone had bid $76 in the last seconds and got the Stanwell for a bargain price.
&@$%*!
Anyway, it was my first time at an auction, and it was fun.
Any OT'ers here have any experience with EBay? I guess the trick is to bid the max you're willing to pay in the last few seconds.
I need a timer next time.
