Pancreatic cancer accounts for only 2 percent of all new cancers in the United States, but it is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths. As brokemom stated, pancreatic cancer research is underfunded. It is underfunded because it only gets 2% if the total research money- the formula is based it on number of cases per year and not number of deaths. It should get a lot more due to the huge number of deaths and the quickness of the deaths. It is the same with childhood cancer, which only accounts for 1% of the total cancer cases- so it only gets 1% of the funding. But childhood cancer is different from adult cancers- mostly brain tumors and luekemias- and plus it's kids for christsakes so it needs more than 1% of the funding! |

Michael Landon smoked 267 packs a day or something. I'm sure he had everything cancer.
eta: except hair. He didn't have the hair cancer. |

brokemom wrote: I understand completely what you went through, BM. My Mom had Ovarian Cancer and like Pancreatic Cancer, Ovarian is on the bottom of the list as well when it comes to awareness as well as funding. Most women who are diagnosed with OC don't stand a chance because by the time they find out it's too late. It's hard to detect and when they do it's at Stage Four... they can give you all kinds of drugs to prolong your life, but to cure it there is nothing at this time. Again, I'm sorry for your loss. |
