I wouldn't say totally unnecessary. 5-3 is the last point at which scrambling to get someone to flip has any value. So the scheme kept Randy from trying to flip anyone. Now it's 5-2.

Now at 5-2, the trick for Sugar is when to play the idol. Bob has to have guessed that Sugar has it. The logical next move is for Bob & Corinne to work a deal with either Kenny/Crystal or Matty/Susie: vote Sugar, while the other 3 vote for Bob or Corinne. This sets up 4 for Sugar and 3 for Bob/Corinne. If Sugar plays the idol, Corinne goes home on schedule. If she doesn't, Sugar goes home and the dominant alliance still leads 4-2.

If that doesn't work this next week, then the Bob/Corinne survivor has to try it at 5-1. If Sugar doesn't realize that they're going to go after her to force the idol out of the game, she'll join the parade of people blindsided while holding an idol.

Or, if the previews really are true and Bob finds the other HII, they should play it and vote Sugar. It would be possible to have the double HII scenario: the 5 vote Bob, Bob/Cor vote Sugar, and both Bob and Sugar play their idols.
