15. Duchess (The Aristocats)
Duchess isn't really the main character in The Aristocats per se, as the movie centers around more of an ensemble cast in general (Duchess, the
three kittens and Tom O'Malley the alley cat), but I thought I should include her anyway. Duchess, the mother of three adorable little kittens is a refined
and sofisticated kitty who lives with her wealthy, doting owner. She is knowledgable in art and music, can play the harp, and teaches her children to play the
piano! Despite being an aristocrat, however, she doesn't come across as snobby to the common kitties and she is very devoted to both her owner and her
children. Her french accent is really cute too.
14. Pongo (101 Dalmations)
Pongo is in the same position as Duchess in that his movie had so many characters running around (heck, it's called 101
Dalmations afterall), he wasn't really the main character per se. He ranks higher than she does simply because I'm more of a dog person. Anyway,
Pongo is an extremely dedacted father, who never gives up his search for the puppies after they are kidnapped. He's also a kind and wonderful husband to
Perdita. My favorite thing about Pongo, however, is the snarky way he refers to Roger as his "pet" and how he is the brains of the household who
basically takes care of Roger.
13. Dumbo (Dumbo)
Dumbo is a unique protagonist in that he doesn't have any lines and is completely mute for the entire movie. Despite this, you can't
help but become emotionally attached to his character and the horrible ideals he goes through. Dumbo is a sweet, eager to please, lonely baby elaphant who
just wants to be with his mother (on that note, the scene where Dumbo's mom is taken away from him is one of the saddest and most disturbing scenes in a
Disney movie ever), yet people (and bitchy mean girl elephants) treat him like a complete freak of nature simply because of his big ears. Anyway, I love
elephants and Dumbo is completely adorable. Plus, an elephant that learns to fly is SO much cooler than a creepy kid from Neverland who can fly (take that,
Peter Pan!!!). One thing I've never understood is how Cinderella gets two sequels, but they couldn't have made one for Dumbo where
we get to see him a little older and with an actual voice. Oh well. Surely they'll come up with one eventually.
