That way every working number has a chance of being selected, bitch.

They call either registered voters or "likely voters"and ask them questions. They do not call cell phone users and the person must be willing to answer the question and home and the pollsters don't know what to do with all these new registered voters. I think the numbers are probably off because they're not talking to cell phone users who are more likely to be young or poor. Most of the polls were pretty correct for the primaries though

The campaigns get their lists of phone numbers and addresses from the states with information from voter registration. I'd assume the polls do the same and unless people give the state their cell phone number no one would have it. The polls were fairly accurate for the primarys. They're not perfect, that's why there is a margin of error.

The largest polling pools (national polling pools) are around a third of that (some as little as a tenth), and those pools include landlines. They have almost 10,000 potential cell phone numbers for each area, and yet their entire pool comprises between 3,000-4,000 RV or LVs total maximum. Most of the polls of LV have Obama in the lead by somewhere around 5%. In the battleground states Obama is leading by less than that. If McCain wins every battleground state, he will win the election. I am not saying it is likely, but it's certainly within the realm of possibility, especially if the polls are flawed (which they no doubt are, it's only a question of to what extent and in whose favor.)
