They can go back and make changes to the first episode after the outcome is known. I don't think that it's a coincidence that most of the winners have had memorable scenes in episode 1: - Earl's "King of Fiji" - Parvati's episode 1 including her opening confessionals - Todd's conversation with Jean-Robert And many other examples. And Amanda was completely ignored in episode 1 of Micronesia, so it's not like the editors gave everyone in the final 4 a good first episode just in case they won. They HAD to know that Parvati was the winner, or they went back and beefed up her first episode after filming ended and they knew the result of final tribal council.

It does seem way to neat that Parvati had such a great premiere episode and both Cirie and Amanda were completely neglected.

Cirie wasn't a part of the story at ALL that episode, yet she got completely unnecessary confessionals about being a couch potato and a fan at home, and about wanting to go with the flow and vote for anyone, as long as it wasn't her.

Parvati, Todd, and all the other winners (most, at least) were fairly strategic players. They knew that they would be important in the merger and probably got the episode 1 edit that reflected their gameplay. So, maybe those who play the game seem to win now. But when you have Bob and Danni who, didn't really have to play hard, how are they editted? Something to watch for! I could also see them going back and giving the winner (if they got no airtime in the first episode) some kind of scene.

That's what editing is. If they wanted Cirie to be the focus of what was going on and how she was left out of both alliances, they could have. They have confessional footage from everyone that illustrates how they're feeling, etc. People who say Cirie was significant in the first episode of Micro were looking for her to be significant because they liked her. Had she not been a returning player she would never have been a winner pick.

There were people who eliminated her because of that, and I completely agree with it. She never had a winner's edit, ever...

In Burnett's book about S1, we were told that the rough edits of each episode are made on the spot. Even for those who didn't read the book you saw Kelly watching a draft of episode #1 during a reward. We also know that the final edit of each episode is done very close to airtime, at a time when the winner IS known. I remember that one season's finale was spoiled when CBS contracted for last minute music and sound editing a week before the finale was aired.
