Michael, we don't base our ratings on the average viewer. We can discuss a casual viewer's take on things, but we base our stats on an Edgic analysis. We supposed to catch those quick, subtle points, not dismiss or lessen their value because the casual viewer would.

The edit is for people who watch once a week and don't rewatch and rewatch. That's a fact. The recap is there because said people need to be hit over the head with what is going on. Of course playing Edgic means we catch the subtle points. Casual viewers don't often see the small things at first glance. It builds over weeks, like a clever ending to a good book. They are strung along to a satisfying ending, when the book is well written. "Oh, I should have seen that coming!"

The subtle points are noticed by us. But they are meant to be subtle. The editors do lay it on thick when they truly want viewers to feel something. Extreme examples. Steph is a tribe of one. "Oh she's so awesome, she's survivng on her own." Dead grandmother. "That bastard I hate him! Why can't he go home tonight!" Two idols. "They outsmarted James! Why didn't he play the idols! Todd and Amanda are smart." And examples to provoke casual viewers to squirm and ponder and find the wrong conclusion. "Is Tom really strong arming Katie?" "Julie is never voting for Chris now." "Jenna is sick against three guys, she's toast, just like I thought Vecepia was when Sean left."

Of course we see the subtle moments too, the smaller ones, the ones the casual viewer often miss. But the intent of the edit is to be subtle in those moments. Lay the seed. It will grow as the weeks progress. We should see through it and tell them, "Gotcha!" But we should recognize the moments that aren't meant to hit the casual viewer over the noggin from the ones that are. It is not lessening the moment's value. It is simply rating it accordingly.

We don't know in episode one if Todd will outsmart Jean Robert, or if it bites him. We just know for sure that Todd is a gamer and the stage is set. We know that Chris saved himself against being targeted when not balancing, but we don't know in one episode whether it proves he's that good, or if it bites him when he fails again. We know that Crystal boasted about herself and then flopped. We don't know yet if it is her moment to wake up and figure out a better plan, or the end before she began. It was just there. A planted seed. It is going to grow and bloom into something eventually. I would agree with you, the bloom is almost assuredly her downfall. But this was not a full grown flower in episode one, just a seed being watered. When the petals are bright yellow and pink the editors will make sure we see the flower. I just felt that for now, all we saw was the watering can and where the seed was planted, which puts us ahead of the casual viewer, who only saw the green grass of Gabon. We did our job, and will watch for it to grow and see what type of plant it is.

But that's just my opinion. And trapped with an empty house that I can't afford and hopefully I don't have taken away (if you want to live in Columbus I have a great deal for you!) I can tell you gardening a yard you don't want sucks ass, so don't trust me all that much.
