I'm gonna do the ratings without visibility numbers right now, because I find that a bit hard to gauge. First Episode: Crystal - MOR (debated positive) Dan - UTR CG - MORM Gillian - OTTM Ken - MORP Matty - MOR Michelle - OTTN Randy - CPM(I don't think he was edited as a villain. He's observant and kind of un-pc, but he has no negative svp and the editing seems to agree with him on everything. I'm not even sure the mixed is necessary. Debated MOR) Susie - UTR Ace - CPN (Debated mixed) Bob - MORP Charlie - MOR Corrine - MOR (Debated mixed, but decided that saying "I'm a bitch and I'm gonna own it" isn't all that negative and "Bob is adorable" is not in itself enough to push her to positive) Jahcquiee - UTR Kelly - INV Marcus - CP (Debated positive) Paloma - UTRP Sugar - UTR Second Episode Crystal - MOR (Debated positive again. I think maybe I just like her) Dan - CP GC - OTTM (I don't think he warrants a CP. All I remember is a lot of leader\no leader talk. I have no idea what his strategy is. I just don't find him... complex.) Gillian - MORM Ken - MOR Matty - MOR (Debated UTR) Randy - CP Susie - UTR (Debated MOR, but what does it matter really?) Ace - INV Bob - UTR (Debated INV, but he was talked about) Charlie - God, I just don't know. Honestly. Corrine - MORP ( Not sure at all about this one either. Debated no tone, but she got positive svp from both Charlie and Marcus at the alliance talk. WE know she's a evil-tennis-racket-smashing-homely-girl-humiliating-bitch, but that's not how the editing went this episode. Right now she's the smartest girl around!) Jahcquaie -UTR (debated MOR, but she's the silent alliance partner. She's out of contention anyways. And has a stupid name) Kelly - INV Marcus - CPP Paloma - INV Sugar -INV Not going to win: Sugar, Paloma, Kelly, Jackquieie, Dan, Susie, Ace. Also not going to win, but not as blatantly: Bob (Yau-men don't win), Ken (dopey music, tripping over himself, neverbeenkissed etc...), Matty (nothing substantial at all to my recollection), CG (too mixed). Contenders, sort of: Corrine, Randy, Crystal, Charlie (in order of likelihood) Obvious Winner: Marcus. So, thoughts: Let's all come to accept the fact that Marcus is winning this season. I am currently bargaining (which is why there's more writing after this sentence) slowly moving on to depression. Sigh. So, if they're just setting Marcus up for a huge fall (please?), who can still win? Those are thoughts, more than hardcore Edgic, but I hope they have a place here: Corrine is my first pick in spite of her lack of an opening confessional. She is handled very carefully, and the editors seem to build her as a somewhat complex character instead of the always appealing Horrible Bitch of Doom option. At the very least she's staying a while. Also - smartest girl around. Not bad. Not seeing her talk with Jacquie is bad, but I'm hoping that that's either because a switch up or twist makes Jacquie not relevant at all to the onion alliance, or because Charlie\Marcus become important in a way separate from the onion alliance. Maybe both? Gah. Randy is the only one talking strategy at Fang. He's not doing anything, but the editors are having us know that he is CHOOSING not to do anything as a strategic decision, which is really all they can do if he's doing nothing (which is a possibility). Also the main narrator at Fang, and so far has been backed up by the editing. Everything he says appears to be spot-on. Might go pre-merge, but I really hope not. Also, if Randy did happen to win I think there is no way for the editors not to show him as somewhat negetive. He's just not that nice of a person. I think he's treated fairly. Crystal is my third option. Not much to say. Not bad first two episodes. Was involved with the voting, had some confessionals and stuff. MOR-ish enough to stay in contention. Needs substance fairly quickly. Some wishful thinking may be involved, since I really like her. Charlie can win if he gets some non-Marcus-related content very soon, and if his story is about breaking away from his crush on Marcus and voting him out or something to that effect. Only way it can happen. Fawning endlessly about other contestants does not a winner make. If it's put out there as a "look how much he liked him before!", then MAYBE Charlie has a shot at this. He probably doesn't, though. Because Marcus wins. Sigh. P.S If anyone knows what kind of spoilers exist out there, I'd like to know. Is anyone updating "Spoilers for Speckers" this season?

Comment on no leadership @ TC. Dan - UTR2 very low key... notable for saying he's trying to "find himself" only game comment was repeating what Matty said that Michelle was Negative, and showed how naive at TC with the "didn't think they did too bad" comment GC - CP4... low key in the beginning, but we do learn of his background, come from rough start, now has a chance for million... but his thoughtful responses to the leadership questions at TC show insight Gillian OTTN5 - SHUT UP ALREADY... or as Randy put it "Dude... we lost" She says she's positive, but i really felt like it was shown that she doesn't come across that way.... ie she was flippant to Randy when he hurt himself, back talk to Jeff when he told her to put a sock in it, always trying to be busy busy but is shown to be irritating, etc Ken - OTTP4... he's all about the lovable underdog nerd who has a crush on michelle... he even talked about the last time he kissed a girl (like 4 or 5 years ago)... he's shown as clumsy and trying in vain to keep his girl in it... I could see a MOR, but really... it was all very characiture-like and one-dimensional Matty - MOR3 has the first theme comment about earth's last eden (before intro credits)... comments on having 3 moms and comments on Gillian being a huge load to carry. First to say that Michelle is negative and is pointed out by Jeff as being helpful. I think he said something about the elephants too. Narration... reminds me heavily of Ryan O from PI. Michelle - OTTM4 she was painted as negative nancy, but she did have several scenes that i thought contradicted this including the funny termite scene with Ken as well as the funny and accurate assessments of how "dumb" her team was. And the fact that the editors clearly thought she was right in her assessment of the immunity challenge. Even Matty and Crystal were shown to agree. Personally, i couldn't believe they got rid of her and kept Gillian... WTF!!!! I didn't see Michelle as that negative... i thought Gillian was far more annoying and flippant and a downer than Michelle... Randy - CPM4 Randy admits that he is not a positive person, but was kinda funny about the whole head bonking thing in his exchange with the medics. He was spot on on pretty much everything he said.... especially with Gillian (busy busy, dung, dude we lost). Got inside his head a bit regarding his injury (petrified it will take him out of the game). I felt that the injury was definitely a sympathy moment. CPish comment on Michelle...he wasn't sold on the idea, would have preferred Gillian. Susie - UTR1 Was she there? I only remember her telling us about her name and that she's a mom.... and she picked "surfer guy" cause they need some muscles on the team. KOTA Ace - CP4... i didn't think Ace was negative. I thought he came across as confident. He tells us where he's coming from, no fear, full steam ahead, etc... He was shown as a team player...both in helping people up the hill and helping Bob fix the roof. He was shown as a leader where by he gave suggestions and people followed those suggestions. Charlie and Marcus complain about it, but the complaints are contradicted when people are shown as following Ace's suggestions. Ace also explained about the yoga thing... where he wanted the team to be in sync for the challenge...and they were. Charlie noted Ace has a plan, Marcus thinks Ace will dig his own grave, Paloma says Ace gets on her nerves (although Paloma was also shown as laughing at others and being lazy, so take it for what it's worth)... I could see a MOR... but i didn't think there was any tone. Bob - MORP3 I love Bob... which means of course, he won't win... I love that he used his buff as a bow-tie... he rocked this episode, even though all we really know about him is what he does and what he likes to do, he's a team player, he's smart, he's a boy-scout and that he is well thought of. Charlie - OTT3 I don't think i learned anything about Charlie.... except that he likes Marcus.... Charlie has a HUGE crush on Marcus....he is practically drooling over Marcus... Charlie's edit is all about his crush on Marcus... he trusts Marcus, He has a special connection with Marcus, Marcus has beautiful eyes.... and what is up with that HUG! But, Charlie has shown a tiny bit of game: he comments on the Fang tribes picks "is this stupid survivor" (which supports Michelle's assessment)... also sees that Ace has a plan. He's still pretty flat though. Corinne - UTR2 - The bitch never came to fruition. She thinks Bob is awesome. Jacque - INV... i'm not counting the self intro's Kelly - INV - if possible, she had less than Jacque. Marcus - MOR3... what i learned about Marcus, i got from Charlie. Marcus did a bit of narrating in the beginning, and we see some strategy talk between him and Charlie. He does make a theme related comment before the credits. Also kisses the flint. Most hilarious comment of the hour = 2 Adams... i could go CP i suppose... as he was shown quite aware of what was happening with Charlie, but he just felt really MORish and neutral. Paloma - UTRN2 Pfft. Laughing at people is negative...especially when you have nothing to offset it. Bob didn't laugh, he acknowledged that he should be stretching too... Paloma laughed at them doing yoga in the jungle in their underwear.... Also reads treemail. Sugar - UTR2 makes comment on the wild animals... and giggles. I saw her a lot... enough that i know who she is... cheering team on, working on puzzle, face shots... Gone: Kelly, Jacque, Susie Possible Winners: Marcus, Ace, Matty, GC and oh what the hell... i'll throw in.... Randy too (just for fun) I'm afraid that none of the females quite make my list.... darn. I can barely make a case for crystal or corinne, and i like both of them... but there just isn't anything there after this first hour. now on to rewatch Part 2....

Some strategy talk with Ken, and she found worms. Dan - CPM5 - almost entirely because of Exile. He went really winey and poor me regarding exile though - hence the mixed tone. I liked that he dumped his bag in earnest at TC and asked that they don't try to flush the idol GC - CPM5 he was the star this episode. Everything at Fang was seen through GC's eyes, good and bad. His behaviour wasn't consistent and he was rightly criticized for stepping down as leader as well as rightly applauded. hmm. Good praise for his team and the fishing. Gillian - OTT4 - she was classified as a burden in part 1... and still is... she gets in the way during the challenge, Ken points out that she is their weakest physical link, she is outed as the snorer...even though there were several snoring. Caricature. Ken - MOR2 - boot distraction and is the first to voice Gillian this episode. Clumsiness is reinforced. Slightly Positive... comes from his funny "5 Sardines" comment. Matty - MORP3 pretty visible but still nothing too deep from him.no real opinion of his own though... just always seems to be repeating what others have already said. P because he really does try to keep his team's spirits up. Randy - MORM3 spot on with comments - again. Very cool moment regarding fishing hook thing. But he didn't get to talk about it.... Crash and burn comments but good insight to leadership issue. I know the vis chart says 4... but he doesn't feel like a 4. Susie - UTR2 Susie who? oh yeah... she talked with Gillian. KOTA Ace - UTR1 - Present and helping in fire scenes and fishing scenes. Shown predominately catching a fish and also praises Marcus. There are actually 2 sentences that Ace speaks...but neither made it onto the Vis Chart. I know It's not a lot, but it's not INV... to understand what invisible is... see Kelly... (who? oh yeah, that's the point) Bob - UTRP2 - we see Bob using the net, we see Bob making fire with Ace & Marcus. Bob does not speak. But we do hear his name about 4 or5 times between The Onion Alliance members, and it's all pretty positive. Ace & Bob are pretty equal for screen time... Bob edges Ace only because his name was used. Charlie - OTT3. It's all about the love boat. This time we learn that Charlie feels anxious when Marcus leaves. sigh if i wanted this kind of drama i'd watch desperate housewives.... Charlie also talked about the "1 Brain" thing but didn't realize that Corinne thinks of him as the #4 position... (re Corinne & Marcus' first chat... Charlie was added by Corinne as an after thought). Corinne - MOR2 - it's pretty much all strategy talk from her. She trusts Jacque... but we've never seen them having any sort of connection like we have with Marcus & Charlie. She suggests Bob first and also explains about the 4 person alliance + 1. Jacque - UTR2 - seriously... for being in a fairly major Alliance... I almost think Bob had a bigger presence this episode. She does get credit for being observant. She's the one who noted it was dangerous to be of chatting like that so soon... and she had a confessional! Kelly - INV... i don't think we even see her this time. Marcus CP3 - Explains the Onion Theory and gets corinne & Jacque involved. Placates Charlie. Catches a fish. Talks about chores. Serves food to Ace. Tells us and Charlie that Charlie is his number 1... does not correct Corinne when she says Marcus Jacque & Corinne are the top 3. Marcus also has no comment what so ever on the meeting of 4.... which i thought was odd. Paloma - INV... i don't think we even see her this time either. Sugar - UTR1 She spoke a couple of things and we see her cleaning fish & giggling... It's not a lot but it's more than Kelly & Paloma got... -- Gone: Kelly, Jacque, Susie, Paloma, Sugar Possible Winners: Ace, Matty, GC, Randy, Crystal, Corinne (I'm stretching for the 2 girls... but i do like them) More than likely to win: Marcus

When Jeff said "immunity back up for grabs", we see a reaction shot of Randy looking at the immunity idol, and then a shot of Marcus, Corinne and Jacquie nodding. Can this be any sort of clue to the future? (sine Randy is one of the most developed Fang character, and we know that Marcus, Corinne and Jacquie are in alliance from Kota).

Won't even try to rate this episode. It was bizzare editing - I almost fell off my seat when they had that confessional in the middle of the challenge. What is that - Big Brother? Yikes. Overall, I didn't enjoy the episode, but there are some great characters, so hopefully the season turns out to be good. As far as winners go - no one stuck out to me on Fang. They were all more OTT than complex - can't think of a single player who was really shown weighing his options, or a player whose personality was exposed in a non-OTT manner. If I had to name someone, it'd be Kenny, but to me he's most likely the sweetheart, not the winner. Which makes me look at Kota. The 4-way alliance was shoved down our throats. Charlie can't win (his drooling over Marcus was not winner material, sorry), neither can Jacquie (no presence). So it's likely either Marcus or Corinne. Marcus was clearly the bigger presence, and seems the obvious winner, but there was something to Corinne's character, too. Bob and Ace are also big characters who are related to the alliance story, but they seem more like OTT-distractions than winners. The other people on this tribe I don't even know. List: 1. Marcus 2. Corinne 3. Kenny 4. Bob 5. Ace

Even when he's not directly shown, he was spoken of well by the others. In particular, there's probably a connection with Corinne and Bob that's being set up early on. First we had her commenting directly on him while building the shelter then we had her actually bringing him up as a possible fifth for the onion alliance.

I'd like to mention another oddity that I saw at least twice in the first episode (don't recall it in the 2nd). In the leadup to a commercial break we heard JP talk about what's coming up. I hated it. Hate hate hate. It was a sad ripoff of one of the dumber aspects of one of the dumber shows on TV: "The Batchelor": "When we come back..." I don't want those scenes. We don't need those scenes - at least, I don't need them when you're telling a good, compelling story. Maybe whoever did them was canned after the first episode, or perhaps gently led away from the editing machine. But please take those away. I know that most of the popular "reality TV" shows have their quirks. You know, for instance, when a commercial is coming in The Amazing Race because [enter name of pair here] are at an airport and they think they JUST MISSED THEIR FLIGHT and [enter name of one of the pair here] says: "We're totally screwed" followed by DRAMATIC MUSIC... and cut to commercial. That happens about three times per episode. Well, SEG, you've got the most successful reality franchise ever. Don't diminish yourself by messing with your formula by ripping off a quirk from a cheesy show. Yeah, a couple of seasons ago they added the brief scene before the opening credits. Not bad, over all, and not a copy of any other popular reality show. But this whole "when we come back" crap must stop. Now. (Hey, edgic is all about editing...) Thank you.

Green Coffee surmised about drive by Edgicians and others seeing Marcus. Remember, Todd was that obvious. By the end, those people all knew Amanda had it in the bag. Doubt will build, doubt may conquer, don't be lost in episode 1 & 2. Then, let's go forest instead of trees. Let's look at something about Ace compared to Marcus and Charlie that's important. Instead of arguing Paloma's tone, which is unimportant for her as she is eliminated as a winer by most, I think, it's better to concentrate on something deeper. Here is Ace's edit. He introduces himself as growing up around Concords and money. He wants to lead and begins with the latrine scene. Paloma immediately is shown saying Ace is on her nerves. Ace then says he is the full package and expects Jeff to hand him the million. He will offer suggestions, others will carry it out, but then he'll get the credit for it. Immediately, Marcus and Charlie give him five, no, one day to become obnoxious. Marcus says they should let Ace run the show since he will dig his own grave. Later, while Ace is leading the group in Yoga, with Charlie and Marcus in their underwear with him, Paloma and Bob both comment negatively on it. What is the deeper meaning? Charlie and Marcus' plan is already paying dividends. They are following him in yoga, letting him lead, and by doing so Ace is unnerving Paloma. That's just the beginning. It's why simply stating Paloma is Negative isn't enough. The real focus is that Marcus and Charlie have constructed a plan, and without re-stating it, the viewer sees it working. It isn't hit over the viewers head, yet, but it will lead, I think, to further moves along the same lines. Ace's grave is being dug as well as the latrine. Michael

Fang Gillian: OTT4 Played the Pollyana card relentlessly. I suspect that MB thinks that she should have been booted 3 days earlier. Crystal: MOR4 Got respectable airtime, but wasn`t shown as heavily involved in the boot decision. Susie: UTR1 Barely avoids an INV; a bizarre selection by Crystal at that point in the pick'em. Mattie: MOR3 Made very little impression on me, even after the third viewing (other than trying to get Randy off the fence). Randy: CPN5 Learned a fair bit about him, and he got extra screen time via the injury. Managed to keep his negativity to his confessionals, unlike Michelle. Dan: UTR1 Not a good Ep 1 edit for your winning chances when your tribe goes to TC. GC: MORN3 The whole TC leadership discussion made him look wishy-washy. Ken: CPP4 The nerdy guy that we're supposed to like - perhaps too much information about his love life, but in the end he came across as a nice guy that wouldn't sacrifice his game by supporting a lost cause. Michelle: CPN5 Well tended edit for a first boot, with enough insight provided to warrant a CP (by Ep 1 standards). Amazing how many of her comments at TC got positive reinforcement, including the famous Survivor chimes. Despite that, despite being no worse than the second worst female athlete on the tribe, despite the minor showmance, she was a unanimous boot. Hence an N tone rating. Her "Fong, kiss my ass confessional" summed up her edit nicely. Kota Bob: CPP3 Got the wise elder edit that adds value to the tribe by providing leadership, in contrast to Gillian. Several examples of positive SPV (unlike Gillian who got negative SPV). Ace: OTTN3 All the negative SPV made him one-dimensional (he thought that he was being so clever, but his tribemates saw right through him). Strong contrast between the tribe's reaction to his leadership and Bob's. Sugar: UTRN1 Spare us the ditzy blonde act, please. Marcus: MOR3 Much of his time was as a narrator, but his reaction to Charlie showed him in a good light (not homophobic but not interested). Charlie: MOR3 His story was mainly swooning over Marcus, along with the odd bitchy comment that makes good television. Paloma: UTR1 A better episode 1 than Liliana had (and had to love her for mocking Aras (oops, I meant Ace, our new pretentious yoga asshole)). Kelly: INV1 At the end of this episode, indistinguishable from Jacque (not good for her chances of winning). Probably not a threat to replace KellyW as my favourite Survivor Kelly. Jacque: INV1 See Kelly. Corinne: UTR2 Tough words in her opening confessional, but then positive about Bob's contribution to camp life. Episode 2 Crystal: MOR3 Staying on the radar screen and not attracting the negativity surrounding Fang (even though objectively she doesn't seem to have done a whole lot in challenges, considering her background). Dan: MORN4 Talked the talk when he first went to EI, but then was edited as unable to walk the walk. Total contrast in edit to that of Marcus after 2 episodes. Gillian: OTTN3 I'm old, I don't contribute around camp, and I tell people to shut up. Bob could have taught her a few things. Ken: UTR2 Big drop-off this episode (maybe he was pining for Michelle). Another member of the anti-Gillian chorus. Mattie: UTR2 My suspicion is that he is much more involved in boot decisions than we've been shown. If that's true, it's a bad omen for his winning chances, which at this point are minimal. Randy: MORN3 Apparently has no fear of getting Pagonged (though why he does not is a mystery). Relentless early negativity somewhat offset by his fish-hook innovation. Susie: UTR2 The Fang contestant that we know the least about. Ace: INV1 My worst-case scenario (an Ace victory) seems unlikely. Bob: UTR1 Just enough to avoid an INV rating. Charlie: MOR3 The Marcus-love is getting repetitive. Hope that there will be some pay-off down the road (eg one betrays the other). I won't rule him out as a winner since Danni's early story-line was all about Gary Hawkins. Corinne: UTR2 Another contestant that I'm not quite ready to eliminate from winning contention, but only because of the well known gender bias in Survivor editing. Jacque: UTR2 Not well positioned in the onion at this point. Kelly: INV1 Will she be the second coming of Jenn Lyon or Liliana? Marcus: CP3 Borderline CP, but incredibly well positioned after 2 episodes as a winner candidate. Now all we need is doubt (tribal switch to break up the new gang of 4?). Paloma: INV1 I had such high hopes for you. Sugar: INV1 No Sugar tonight … (with apologies to the Guess Who). Winner: Marcus the clear leader at this point. I wouldn't credit the editors for being this savvy or clever, but it's always a possibility. That would be my only case for Marcus possibly not winning.
