I've heard the Himalayas are a good trip. Southern India is at the top of my places to see (Kerela, Goa, Nadu), hopefully in 2009/2010. Northern India, not
so much.

Northern India is a wild, wild place. You need to be careful (especially if you are female) but it is worth the extra effort, time and money to experience. I
fell in love with the norhtern states because of that wildness, especially Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
If you can, travel across the Tibetan Plateau, you will not regret it! |

* Bring your drug of choice to help you deal with the teeming masses. Ativan/Valium/Horse pills whatever because that is the biggest shock. Or just walk into
any pharmacy in India and get some good stuff over the counter (codeine and other mild opiates). If you're in the north or in any mountainous area, help
yourself to the free marijuana growing along the rocks. You'll probably see people along the road rubbing the leaves in their hands to pick up the resin.
* Let go of Western notions of personal space/cleanliness/germs/privacy/order. The sooner you do this the easier it will be and your mind will be calibrated to the weird frequency that is India. This is probably what I miss most about my trips there. * BUY CLOTHES. The nicest linen and silk you can get and get a tailor/seamstress to alter them. There are capable people on every corner in the cities that for a few bucks can turn out some great dress shirts, tunics and slacks. Get fitted for custom shoes. * Merchants with the good stuff usually case out the regular shops/markets for tourists so don't be freaked out if a someone approaches you and says they have something you might be interested in if you'll follow them a block down to their shop. Especially if you're shopping for jewellery. Haggling is expected. * Try to get a small kid to hang around with you. Indians tend to go out of their way to help if they see you have kids with you. * Be nice to the security at the Taj Mahal, they may just let you in after hours for a private tour. * Spend more time in the countryside and mountains than the city. Mumbai and Delhi get real irritating after a few hours. * Smile at the crazy holy men/women whenever you can. They'll totally do some fun voodoo shit and bless you up the wazoo, especially the ash-covered nude rasta guys. * Ride in as many tuktuks as you can. * Try REALLY hard to stay for at least one night in the converted palaces that are now hotels. The money is totally worth it for the barbequed buffet alone. * BEWARE OF THE EVIL MONKEYS. For realsies. |

Wish I had the money to afford ten weeks of vacation.Not including airfare (which was about $1500), I spent maybe an extra $1000, and that's overestimating it. The exchange rate is pretty generous, and there are many, many places you can stay for very cheap (i.e. spent 2 1/2 weeks in Delhi and paid $120 room and board, and the accommodations were very nice). And then when you go into small towns, villages, and hill stations, everything is even cheaper. And as I said, I trained everywhere for less than $50 whenever I wanted a change of scenery.

I went to India last year. Bring lots of Purell, Wet Ones and toilet paper. Don't eat street food. Drink only bottled water (check the seals on the caps to
make sure they were refilled by a street vendor). Get a script for Cipro, fill it and bring it along with some Immodium. All that aside, relax and have fun.
It's an amazing place and I dream of going back. Oh and Delhi sucks.
