Anyone been to India? |

|
Every other week it seems our travel plans change... now we're thinking about going to India next year (Delhi, Jaipur, Agra). Anyone been? Recommendations,
horror stories, and any other information would be greatly appreciated.

You must not watch The Amazing Race because you wouldn't want to go anywhere near the place if you had.

I was born in India and came here at a really young age. I have to agree with some of the sentiment - be careful about the decision.
There are parts of India that are amazing and I love when I visit because I have family there and I also speak a couple of the languages (English may be one of the national languages but it won't help you everywhere). That makes things infinitely easier (harder to get scammed, easier to get around the places). But even with those advantages, there hasn't been a time when I haven't gotten really sick or even slightly scammed. Unless you're willing to shell out big bucks to stay in the best accommodations, get the best tours, it may not be worth the trouble. But that's your call.

Wow I'm surprised at the negativity. I had a blast there, and that was before reform and the internet had brought lots of modern conveniences to the
country. Of course, that was kind of the appeal -- that it was so different from the U. S. I wonder if you can still say that or not.
My recommendations would depend on what you feel like doing. For sightseeing, Delhi and its environs can't be beat for the Mughal monuments, etc. We also ate in an amazing tandoor restaurant called Bokhara, I don't know if it's still open. But Delhi seemed a little philistine, with lots of bureaucrats. Bombay didn't have as much sightseeing but was a lot more cosmopolitan. We stayed with members of the Parsee community, who are amazing. Definitely look into the Parsee sights there. I didn't go to the south, but would love to in the future.

You know how the Amazing Race makes all of these countries look pretty cool and want to visit them? Well, they couldn't do it for India.

You might want to visit one of India's many leper colonies.
It's a unique travel experience you just won't find in most other places. The lepers are very friendly and welcome outsiders, especially if you have THUMBS. You can help them carry water buckets from the well to earn your keep. They'll let you spend a few nights and will be glad to share their rice with you as long as you don't mind bandaging a few stumps around camp.
