S17 Gabon Discussion - Onion Fails and Gets Blindsided Once Again

GC 2. Matty 3. Dan 4. Marcus 5. Ken 6. Corrine 7. Crystal 8. Bob 9. Jacquie 10. Charlie 11. Ace (Couldn't tell but that leaves Michelle, Kelly, Paloma, and Sugar) 16. Susie 17. Randy 18. Gillian Then by the time people got to the hill the order was: 1. GC 2. Marcus 3. Charlie (Can't tell the order but at 1 point it was Ace, then Crystal, then Corinne, then Jacquie, then Kelly, then Bob) 15-18. Matty & Dan (went back to help), Randy & Gillian Climbing the hill was: 1. Marcus 2. GC 3. Michelle 4. Kelly 5. Jacquie 6. Corinne 7. Sugar 8-11. Bob, Charlie, Ace, Paloma* 12. Ken 13. Randy 14. Susie 15. Gillian 16. Dan 17. Crystal 18. Matty * Charlie actually could've finished with Jacquie and Corinne but he went back to help the Sugar, Bob, Ace, Paloma group and I think Ace was helping them out too ** Dan and Matty went and helped their teammates. Dan pushed up Susie and Matty helped up Gillian. Then they both helped out Crystal

Look at Kota compared to Fang ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! I hope Fang pulls it together because the Kota tribe is going to have it easy and I don't want to see another Privileged Moto Vs. Poor Ravu. I agree with Jeff and Charlie. Fang played "stupid Survivor" and did it to themselves. They self-segregated as much as the cool kids. Gillian and Crystal weren't keen on having muscular studs or pretty young girls on their team. So the most desirable alpha males ended up on Kota. Then Fang guys got so paranoid about strength that they picked ONLY guys, while the Kota girls balanced the genders on their tribe.

That's not really true since Fang miraculously still got Matt, Dan, and GC despite those questionable picks. There were enough dumb decisions to go around like Ace picking Sugar all early. I have no idea what you're talking about with the unbalanced gender thing since both teams are pretty even. Fang had 5 guys and 4 girls. Kota has 5 girls and 4 guys

You need to balance what's good for the tribe chaellenge-wise and what's good for you socially. It is odd he picked Paloma rather than stronger girls like Jacquie or Kelly. Actually thol older ladies would be in better shape if more weak young females got stuck on Fang, because they would be decent boot targets. However, the pretty white girls stuck together just like the older women. So Gillian got a tribe that was both weaker and had a male majority.

Gillian picked Crystal because she recognized her as an Olympic athlete so she was thinking of athleticism. Only 2 alpha males ended up on Kota and Fang got 2 also. I don't see how anyone could know about who was more "desirable" ahead of time

But now they can't risk booting Charlie, Marcus, or Ace.

I think it has more to do with the individual thoughts of your tribe rather then some set rule that too many strong guys will explode your tribe. It didn't stop Fei Long in China. They could still boot Charlie, Marcus, or Ace even if it wasn't smart because the girls outnumber them like what happened on Raro. Or Ace could be removed for being too much of a leader like Hunter on Maraamu

The seasons that have begun with tribes chosen by castaways (Thailand, Palau, Fiji) were some of the worst seasons and/or most-unbalanced seasons, and other ones that involved pick-em's later down the line (All-Stars, Vanuatu, Exile Island, Cook Islands and Micronesia) often turned out unbalanced tribes as well. I don't count Amazon's tribal division as a pick-'em, since only Jenna and Dave redivided the tribes, nor China, since they chose only two members instead of completely reallocating tribes. Especially in seasons where it started off with player-divided tribes, it failed. Chuay Gahn was physically far weaker, and that season was BORING. We all know how much worse Ulong was at the challenges. Fiji had the addition of poor/rich to further off-set the tribes, and that season was just awful. I don't think that Gabon will turn out much better. Fang's already being slammed out of the gate, and though we're only two episodes in, it seems like a pretty big failure of a season. Can we have producer-picked tribes forever from now on?

China was divided by the producers and those tribes weren't balanced. Same with Marquesas and Maraamu could've been the first Ulong if it wasn't for the swap

In fairness, the Thailand pick'em was solely determined by Jan and Jake, and the ASS dissolve involved moving just two members from Saboga onto each of the other tribes. The thing that gets me about the Gabon pick'em is that there was no reason for it other than pure laziness on the producers' parts. At least in Thailand, it was a first, and Palau handled it in a completely different way than that. I'll admit, I was curious about what would happen if a tribe lost every single immunity challenge (even though we probably would've seen it in Marquesas had the swap not occurred), but once it happened, nobody wanted to see it happen again. So of course they made sure to guarantee it would in Fiji with the haves/have-nots. What was the point of a pick'em this season? Just for the hell of it? It was a total waste of time. Pick'ems have gotten really old. We've had some variation of them in every single season since ASS except Guatemala (and two before that).

Another will have a mutiny. Another will have a double vote. Some seasons will start off producer divided. Others will be a schoolyard pick. Now they've added the switching back and forth between final 3 and final 2. Sometimes there are 16 castaways. Other times 18 and 20. So I think they're just recycling different aspects of the game and keeping things unpredictable. I wouldn't be surprised to see 3 tribes again eventually among other 1 time twists
