I think the object is to hit the water with as little surface area as possible in order to make the smallest splash. It seems the actual dive is less important in synchro so maybe the fist is ok?

The majority of sports in the Olympics are under the jurisdiction of their respective governing bodies (FIBA, FINA, FIVA, etc.). Each governing body determines who is age-eligible to compete in any given event, not the IOC. A major exception is football (soccer). The Olympics are not FIFA-sanctioned, so the IOC must determine who competes in the Games through qualifying tournaments and rounds. This causes all sorts of drama in Europe. A lot of European clubs have international rosters with players who want to play for their country. Unfortunately, since the Olympics aren't FIFA-sanctioned, some clubs bar their players from going to the Olympics. I know of at least two Brazilians who just walked out on their clubs to join their national team this summer.
