22 - Richard Patrick (Filter)
Probably the most underrated lead singer in one of the most underrated metal bands of the 90's, this guy had a knack for yelling at the top of his lungs without being irratating to the human ear. I'll never understand why Filter has never been more popular considering how much better they were than your average 90's rock band. Of course they had one mainstream hit with "Take a picture" because it was their token soft song. These guys were one of the first bands in the Nu Metal movement and one of the few who actually had talent and knew what real metal was all about, unlike the Korns and the Limp Bizkits who thought that cursing and beating the shit out of your instruements = metal. I get the feeling by the time this list is over I will have discovered some pretty damn good music I was previously unbeknownst to.

This list has no credibility unless Chad Kroeger and Joe Jonas are included.

^ This from the guy who supported Jaydee Bixby. Though in fairness it was all an act.

"Take a picture"I have ridiculous love for that song. Other than that and "Hey Man, Nice Shot" I know pretty much none of their stuff though. Say it ain't so Roadie!

I think the only person who can make screaming more listenable/tolerable in music than Richard Patrick is Dave Grohl. "It's Over" and
"Captain Bligh" have to be two of the greatest rock vocal performances ever. Their debut album kind of falls flat since so many of the songs blend
into each other (although you can't deny great stuff like "Hey Man Nice Shot" and the aforementioned "It's Over"), but Title of
Record is one of the most underrated albums ever, and really pretty diverse for a 'metal' act. Filter never really blows me away but yeah, they never
get the credit they deserve. Their main problem is that some of the lyrics try too hard to be edgy and controversial and they end up coming across as
incredibly lame. They literally have songs with lyrics like "George Bush is fucking us up" and "It makes me wanna stick my dick in your
face."
Did you check out the album he did with the guitarist and bassist from STP, Army of Anyone? I'm a major STP fan so that's how I ended up getting into Filter, and it made for a pretty solid collaboration. But as with all bands like that, it didn't live up to the heights of either STP or Filter. It's still good worth a listen though. This list has officially become awesome and Wyl will have to deliberately make it suck for it to lose that title. Great stuff man. Please let the Irish singer be Dolores O'Riordan. |

21 - Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries)
Introducing themselves with "Linger" and "Dreams", it was in the mid-90's with their second album that The Cranberries exploded on the charts and became a group to be reckoned with. Unlike Gwen or Shirley, Dolores wasn't just some pretty face that 3 guys picked up in order to get attention from horny guys and a female fan base who would look up to her. No, she was a core part of the band and a real musician. Her voice does grate at times, but it's also unique. Depending on the songs, she can really sound heavenly. The Cranberries are known for having many ballads and soft songs that appeal to an older audience, but they can also rock it for a younger audience (i.e Zombie, Promises) making them very versatile. Dolores and her gand had a really good run in the 90's but seem to have dissapear from the map ever since the 2000's (like so many good bands). And as far as her not being a pretty face, try googling her and you will see recent pictures of her with long, black hair. She looks pretty frickin' hot! Next:

I kinda wish this was ranked according to the bands these people were in...I've heard of the Cranberries, but never of Dolores O'Riordan before.
Zombie...great tune. |

20 - Amy Lee (Evanescence)
As the new millenium rang in, it seems like all the good girl-fronted bands were starting to dissapear, that's when Amy Lee and crew came to the rescue with a heavy sound contrasted with angelic vocals. Evanescence hasn't been without criticsm though. For one thing, many people shun them for being too mainstream, but is it really their fault that music stations have taken a like to them? I much rather hear them on the radio than the usual pop crap. Second, many people have criticized Amy Lee for being a poser, that her goth appearance is just an act. Mmmmmm'kay, here's the thing, I'm not 14 anymore, so I really don't give a shit that singers pretend to be punk, goth, whatever. I listen to music for the music not for the style. Amy can dress up in pink Versace when she's off camera for all I care and that wouldn't change a thing for me. I personally find her refreshing in these days of crappy music Next: |

You continue to be fucking awesome for having Amy Lee on your list. I would've had her higher than 20 I think, but whatever.

I'd be all over that Amy Lee but these are all from 10-15 years ago and pretty mainstream. No Cat Power?

Even by mainstream pop radio standards Gwen Stefani's solo work is really bad and worthy of being mocked, and when she was with No Doubt in the 90's
she was more a Fashion Icon than any kind of Rock Icon.
