I've seen a ton of NSers come back, but they can't make the same money here as they do in Alberta. As far as Culinary Institute of Canookia grads.... everyone can get a good job in any city.... outside of the maritimes. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick restaurants SUCK. The only things I truly miss about toronto is furniture, and great food choices. Toronto is a fatties dreamland. Halifax... donair, greasy pizza faire - ugh!

Still though, as long as you're not within an hour's drive of Halifax, housing is affordable to say the least. You can buy/build a house on the shore where I come from for 1/3 what you would pay out here.

This sandstone home in my parents county (in Amherst in Cumberland County) has an insurance replacement value of $6,000,000 and is going for $750k. I prefered Lunenburg and Windsor due to the community and tax base. Cumberland County is pretty depressing and I don't like people all in my business.

My cousin and her boyfriend just bought a place out by mom and dad's for 28. Sure it needs some flipping but GEEZ. It was almost all original architecture and very soundly built, and going for $225k I think. It is remarkable how little Canooks value their heritage. If it was available today, I'd buy it. On principle.

I'm still kicking around the idea of buying undervalued Oceanfront properties and flipping them. Even with dropping price points in the US, Canookia oceanfront properties are a fraction of the cost. I also have been wondering about the potential of building managed retirement communities in some near empty towns. Elderly white flight retirees in Toronto are ripe for the picking.
