I was just fucking with her. Were you here for her shingles thread? It was a fucking hoot. all these morons popping in to give their expert medical opinion and
people actually arguing that if you had chicken pox, you could not get shingles. Which is the opposite of right. Wrong. It was funny. Look it up.

As I understand it, shingles and chickenpox are different manifestations of the same virus. You get chickenpox as a kid, and the virus remains dormant in your
body. In some people, it manifests as shingles when they get older, although most people never get shingles.
Viruses like chickenpox have a symbiotic relationship with humans. Successful viruses don't hurt their hosts; they use us to transmit the virus around, but don't cause any significant damage (like colds, for instance). That's how childhood disease originate: they first appear as plagues (chickenpox first appeared in the Roman Empire in the 2nd or 3rd century and wiped out something like 30% of the population), but over time, the virus mutates to a much milder virus. Kids get sick more than adults because they haven't built up immunities. They get some immunities transferred from their mothers, but one of your body's main jobs in its first 5-10 years is to get sick, so he or she can build up immunity to common viruses. That's why I'm concerned about this notion that we can (or should) vaccinate against everything. What are the unintended consequences of injecting a dozen vaccines into an immature immune system? The drug companies say, "Oh, there's not any risk. After all, we eradicated polio! Now give us money. Lots and lots of delicious money!" I think responsible parents should ask questions about these vaccines and not just blindly obey BigPharma. |

I had chicken pox in 5th grade and like TRho had them in every orifice I have.
When I was 8 mo prego with my daughter, I developed shingles along the nerve from my backbone to my ribs. I had both my kids get the chicken pox vaccine, mostly because the dr said that they either wouldn't get them, or if they did, their cases would be mild. They both did end up getting very mild cases a few years later. |

If you had chicken pox, you can get shingles. It's a nasty circle of life thing.

So what does everything think about Gardasil? I have more confidence in "Big Pharma" than most people here do, it seems. Actually it's not the Pharmaceutical companies I trust as much as I trust doctors, especially the ones that I have personal relationships with. I am getting the shot for my daughter, who is 9, and I am lying about it and not telling her what it's for. I don't want to give her the message that I think it's okay for her to start having sex in a few years, but I want her to be as protected as possible from a really common disease that can hurt her. |

I saw Big Pharma perform at the Newport Jazz fest back in '86. Great set.

I think you should lie and tell her it's a "pretty shot"!! Tell her it will make her look like a PRINCESS!!

They both did end up getting very mild cases a few years later. That's good. My kid's vaccine was an epic FAIL. He had a massive case of the pox and was really, really sick. They get some immunities transferred from their mothers, but one of your body's main jobs in its first 5-10 years is to get sick, so he or she can build up immunity to common viruses. So a vaccine speeds up the process. Biologically it's the same thing as having a very mild case of whatever the disease is. I'm not sure how this would result in allergies or anything. But who knows. |

So if the chicken pox vaccination is the SAME as having a mild case of it, you can still get shingles then, right?

Nay. My post was poorly worded. I should have said that the biological reaction of the body is the same. But who knows, maybe we'll find out in 20 years that the chicken pox vaccine increases the likelihood of getting shingles. |

I've heard that you can't get shingles if you've had chicken pox.

When I was little, my sister got the chicken pox and my mom FORCED me to drink after her and stuff, so I would get them too and get it over with. There is a
picture of me SMILING in my nightie with chicken pox all over. It's a surprise that I'm a semi-functioning adult.

All five of us children came down with the chicken pox on a family roadtrip to the Grand Canyon -- I'm certain my father entertained the idea of abandoning
us in some small town in Arizona.

Last year in high school they were doing the meningitis vaccine. Normally you have to get your guardians to sign off on that kinda shit but we were allowed to
decide on our own if we wanted it.
You know what worries 18 year olds more than the acute possibility of getting autism or whatever the side effect is? Brain swelling. Pretty much everyone chose to get the shot. Team Vaccine! |

I had the Gardasil thing done about a year ago when I figured that my work insurance covered it. Without insurance, it's about $170 per shot at three shots
needed.
Supposedly it's not as effective if you've already been sexed up, but whatevs, my VAJAYJAY is clean. The mumps outbreak in Vancouver is a hoot! So many closet hippie freaks coming out of the woodwork admitting they didn't vaccinate their kids. It started in a religious community in the boonies and now it's moving to the city just in time for school. They had one bish on the local news saying that she wouldn't immunize her young children because her oldest was immunized and then diagnosed with autism, so 2+2=5 for her. I had mumps when it was about 12, it wasn't a big deal although I looked like a swollen freak! ETA: EEEK! I haven't had that meningitis shot. I'm pretty sure the universities give them out when Christmas is approaching. I'll bend over then.
