Back in the day, this was a huge deal. They changed the drinking age to 18 conveniently enough for me, the same year I turned 18. There were so many 18-20 year old douche jockeys that didn't know how to handle their liquor that within 2-3 years the law was repealed and the age limit went back up to 21.
Mark my words if the age is lowered, the same thing will happen.

As someone who was old enough to have legally drank in the US at age 18, the problem, as Star jumper first mentioned, wasn't the 18 year olds who drank as
much as it was the older looking 15-17 year olds who drank. I could get served, without ID, in bars and liquor stores at age 16, and when I was 16 I drove
everywhere. When I turned 18 I was living in a dorm and would drink at the campus bar and walk (stagger) back to my room. The campus bar at the University Of
Miami (Florida) was great, and cheap. When the University runs a bar they can keep the prices low and encourage students to stay on campus.
Of course, not every 18 year old goes to college. Fuck, some go to war, and still can't drink. MADD is a necessary organization, but they aren't always right and shouldn't always get their way. Using their logic, if we would just raise the drinking age to 30 we could save even more lives. |

When the drinking age isn't consistent there is a problem of driving across state lines which is why the feds got involved with using highway funds as blackmail. And that's exactly what we did living in PA, which remained 21, and having to go NJ or DE to party. |

It's never made sense to me that people are adults at 18 for everything except buying alcohol. I don't think we have any other laws that make
exceptions to adulthood in this way, do we?
There was plenty of binge-drinking when the drinking age was 18. And, when I was that age, I remember thinking how stupid it was that I couldn't buy a beer, so I just bought drugs instead. If I was going to buy something illegally, I might as well get something good. I don't think problems with binge-drinking or drunk driving have anything to do with the drinking age. It's all about America's dysfunctional relationship with alcohol. In most countries, drinking is no big deal. We're the only country that makes drinking socially elicit, so people feel like the are proving their manhood or 'adulthood' by slamming drinks. Idiots will get shit-faced no matter what the the drinking age is. |

I can't believe the bullshit in this thread. If the drinking age was 18 when I was in college, I would have consumed 3 or 5 times more alcohol, easily. And
the parties would have been far more out of control.

I don't want them to lower the age now because I had to wait until 21 and they should too god dammit. Being 20 sucks, you date girls that can get into bars you can't so then you have to go to an 18 and up bar, and they don't want to drink because of all the idiots around them. How are you suppose to get them drunk and take advantage then???? |

They lowered the drinking age to 18 the year I turned 21 and was finally able to drink legally - I felt gypped
And no, it makes totally no sense to hold kids liable as adults for crimes they commit or to send them off to war or to allow them to vote as adults, but treat them as children when it comes to drinking |

I agree, hell think about all those kids that are fresh out of their parents supervision, at least there is somewhat of a hinderance to them just drinking
their balls off. I know they can get it, but it definitely limits them.
