I don't care what you say about what impact their music had, every time I listen to their music, half of their songs seem like meaningless pop schlock that was marketed to make American kids go wild and not much else. Yes, they were the first to do it...but so what?

The music of Mozart and Beethoven still emotionally resonates with me, even though it was written centuries ago, because it is emotionally powerful stuff.

Every time I listen to songs like "Yesterday" or "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" or even "Revolution," I can't help but feel bored. To me, it's like listening to Britney Speares or the Backstreet Boys--mildly amusing, maybe something you can groove to a little bit, but nothing else. Just look at the lyrics of Yesterday...are you going to tell me nobody wrote sappy songs about a broken heart before The Beatles came along?

Last time I checked, this thread was not about what band had the greatest impact on music history/music marketing history. This thread was about what albums have been created that had no filler tracks.

To me, more than half of The Beatles' songs was filler music--lacking emotional depth and intrigue compared to some of their other songs which were, admittedly, good. I won't deny that in that era, their presence was powerful, and I know that they helped change Rock 'n Roll or whatever. I just don't find a lot of their music to be compelling or interesting in any way, shape, or form.

Because of that, I think they're overrated, and I don't think Mozart is in any way at all.

In fact, it kind of pisses me off that you'd even think to compare them to Mozart...because he WAS a genius. John Lennon was more of a mediawhore than a musician.

eta: Okay, I suppose I should give John Lennon some credit after bashing him and his band..."Imagine" is probably the greatest musical achievement of the last 30 years. Also, "Norwegian Wood" is one of my favorite songs, and it has very creative and boldly suggestive lyrics (unlike "Yesterday"). I'm not saying The Beatles didn't make any good music--I'm just saying they're definitely very, very, VERY overrated.

Reading that post, it's as if you've never listened to anything they did after 1965. Music scholars, some of them classical music scholars, have been dissecting their stuff for decades -- volumes have been written on their musical innovations. You should read some of them sometime if you think their music doesn't go any deeper than Yesterday and I Want to Hold Your Hand. Listen closely to In My Life, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields Forever, For No One, Julia, A Day in the Life, etc.,None of those songs are hollow pop songs -- they're sophisticated, multi-layered, complex songs that make them every bit as relevant as Beethoven or Mozart. It's a matter of taste if you don't like them, but their influence and significance makes any claim that they're overrated a moot point.
