How do online classes work? |
Lead | |
|
Because of work, I just registered for 4 online classes. I'm wondering how they work? Are they harder than going to the actual classes? Does it ever get
frustrating? Experiences? Thanks.

If you're a procrastinator, then yes, online classes are hell. I have two this semester and I'm already freaking out over them.
My very first online class sophomore year, I didn't even pass it. x_x |

I did one. Just to uprgrade. Complete Bullshit.
You'll find yourself on Here, or Facebook or Myspace or something Believe me. I don't know how you'll manage FOUR. They're alot more work than Regular Class I found.. |

Online classes I have taken use a system called Blackboard, which houses a message board for student/teacher interaction, posting space for the syllabus and
class documents and lecture videos or whatever, and also an online testing system - which is usually timed.

My lowest grades came from online classes. The workload is insane! I had little assignments due every week mainly because the profs want to make the classes
more "active".

True - if the classes are through an accredited school they may overcompensate a little to try to add requirements and "value" to the class. A lot of
schools are still not sure how to manage this sort of option.

I just registered for one today. I took one night class two nights a week last semester and hated every minute of it. I was hoping online would be better.

I totally agree with everyone that the workload can be a LOT heavier just because profs do try to compensate for the fact that you don't meet X times a
week in person. The one thing that I can say about taking online classes is that I've found that computer/math courses seemed to be easier to handle.
I've taken math courses where I just needed to fax in some completed problems once a week and then go to campus once for a proctored test. I would never,
ever take a History or English course online. From my experience, they expect you to do a ridiculous amount of reading and tiny assignments just to make
things seem more "involved."

Yea, the workload for online classes is totally insane! Guaranteed that if I would have taken the class as just a regular lecture, I wouldn't have even had
to do half of the shit I had for the online course.

How do you know when to start? Is a syllabus posted somewhere online?

I did an online course in high school and I passed with flying colours - although, it was high school.
I tried to do an Intro to Macroeconomics course online and stopped - it's bad enough I don't understand basic economics, it's worse that I have to teach it to myself. Good luck. |

With mine the professor usually e-mailed a welcome letter and syllabus before the class began, and then you get the rest of the materials from the class site
online.

I'm taking basic Astronomy/Lab, Reasoning to the Sciences (Philosophy), and Sociology. Will this be easy?

Online classes aren't harder than a traditional class. Usually the online classes are for 9 - 12 weeks, the traditional semester is 15-16 weeks, so you
have to cram the same amount of work into a shorter time period. That's why they seem like they have so much work in them.

How the fuck can you take Astronomy online? Wow.
I would never have wanted to take Philosophy online...sometimes it takes a skilled professor up in your face to make you understand what the hell Nietzsche was talking about. Good luck! |

I'm taking Cost Accounting. I don't think it will be too bad.

Heh, if I remember Gr 11 Physics, you'll probably be using a program called "Starry Night". It literally is a huge sky in a computer program,
lets you set co-ordinates, etc. It's actually quite fun to mess around with.

Online classes = a lot of reading + weekly assignments + having to be in a chat room at a certain time

I took a couple of online classes, but I vow not to take another one. I'm a procrastinator, and I always focused on the classes I took in school and failed
to develop a schedule as to when I'd do my online courses. If you set aside the time for them, they should be fine- the professors for the classes I took
posted the notes for the readings, the syllabus, and just organized everything week-to-week. My workload wasn't too bad- I just had to post once or twice a
week on a messageboard to discuss the material- but some professors will require you to be much more involved. In one class I was going to take (but dropped),
we had four different assignments per week, and I knew I wasn't going to be able to handle it.
But yeah, as long as you stay on top of everything, you should be fine. Just prepare for some of those assignments that require you to be more interactive.

Blackboard is such a tremendous pain-in-the-ass system. I hate it.

I never saw an online class in computer, I did computer subjects during my computer laboratory hours when I was in college. I got the average of 2.00 - 3.00 of
my grades of my computer subjects in the past.
