We are our upbringing. Having attended Catholic school, I knew plenty of guys just like Dan. Always kissing up, always the teacher's pet, always got stars on his conduct chart. But when you got a black mark on your conduct chart, guys like Dan would come up to you with a big, fat smirk on their faces. They were always the hall monitors, telling you not to talk and not to run and reporting you to the Sister Superior when you did. But for the nuns' constant presence, guys like Dan would have had their faces punched in on a daily basis because they were so smarmy.

Guys like Dan were also always picked as the alter boys, primarily because they were such suck-ups and also, I suspect, because they were the ones the priests most fantasized about.

And yes, Dan is the perfectly polite, respectful gentleman. But it's all a Eddie Haskell act if you ask me.

Folk think Jerry is a big, fat chauvinist. And they are right. But 50 bucks says Dan would give Jerry a run for his money in that regard. You think Dan doesn't want his woman to be barefoot in the kitchen and pregnant, I wonder whether that isn't wishful thinking.

I know many disagree. But that's my take, and I'm sticking to it.

And Utopia's BACK! Yesssss! I never even thought of it that way before, but you are sooooo right about the ass kissing part. It reminds me of the stories my Pop tells me about his catholic school. There was one particularly smarmy asshole that would get the shit kicked out of him and S'ter Agnes (I'm making up her name because I can't quite recall, but you get the idea) a couple of times would turn a blind eye because even SHE couldn't stand the little ass kisser.

Has Dan said he attended Catholic school? I thought he just teaches there? The descriptions above sound a bit different than my own experiences. In the years I attended Catholic school (K-12) I only ever had two nun teachers (and they taught religion). There were a handful of nuns around when I was in elementary school but most had nothing to do with teaching or disciplinary stuff. They were just around. It probably varies from school to school (and decade to decade) so I wouldn't assume all schools are the same but 90% of the teachers I had were regular people (college graduates, married, etc).

My take on Renny and Dan:

I think Renny's subtle dislike for Dan comes from not trusting him. She's convinced he's an act and she's probably partially right. From what I can tell, Dan values his job and doesn't want to get out of the house to find out he's been fired. So he has to give up part of himself in order to keep from compromising part of his life outside the house. I wouldn't say the reason for Dan's act is because he's got the mentality of a fourth-grader who just wants to get the most gold-stars. The guy's 25 years old or something like that. He doesn't want to lose his job (and probably would have a hard time getting another school to hire him after BB). It doesnt seem like Renny can accept or understand that so it makes her not trust him because with the exception of toning down her personality in the earlier weeks, she has nothing to lose by being herself (from what I can tell anyway). I think that's great for her but I also think its fair for Dan to play the game however he wants. I don't know how he does it though. Spending months in that house not being able to talk about certain things for fear that what you said could get back to your boss and you'd get fired. I don't think I'd last a week.
