Our carpet isn't stained, but there is a very faint smell of the old owners' pets. This isn't the stink that I smelled when I first saw the house and asked for OT's esteemed opinion about buying a stinky house. That smell is long gone and I wonder if maybe it was a carpet cleaning solution that the people used on the wool carpets - wet wool stinks, stinks stinks. When I visited the house the second time I didn't smell anything bad. I think that maybe their dog peed a lot in the month and a half between when I first saw it and when we finally closed.
Anyway, the smell is there when the A/C isn't on and it is encouraging our stupid puppy to break her house training. We've had to go back to crating her when we are both gone. I would like to lift the the old smell and avoid any new smell from my idiot beagle. I haven't lived with carpet for a long time and it seems very unhygienic so I know that I will want to have a carpet cleaner on hand - no sense in renting one.
I've been researching cleaners but the customer reviews are all so skewed. A dozen people give something a 10, a dozen give it a low score. I suspect the 10s are shills and the low scores are people who don't know how to take care of their stuff. One consistent comment is that the heater elements are crappy and cause clogs in every model. So I want to avoid one that heats the water. I'll just put hot water in it from the get-go.
My mom had one years ago that had to be attached to the sink as the water source. I am not opposed to that at all; it was probably the best cleaner I've ever used. She bought the thing 30 years ago when no one had one in their home (she shares my wariness of the cleanliness of carpets). Then she had one that was an upright and carried a cannister. That was ok, but probably not the best model.
Do any of you have a recommendation for a make/model? I'm fine with spending a bit extra money if it means that I'll have a better product.
I've been reading about carpet cleaners.
