I don't think I'll ever take anti-depressants...I'm a moody person, but (unfortunately for everyone who has to read my posts) I have no interest in
killing myself, so I think I'll be okay without them.
I don't know too much about anti-depressants, but I've always gotten the feeling that anti-depressants is to middle-aged folks as ritalin is to young folks. Doctors prescribe these drugs to people with complicated conditions just so they can make their patients feel like they're doing something to help them, and since just about everyone has some mild form of ADD or depression these days, the drugs probably does help every patient a little bit--even when the drugs are unessential to the patient's condition. That being said--some people really, really do need anti-depressants. Like my grandma. She's kinda batshit crazy though, but I love her to death. <3 |

Instead of anti-depressants, I look at lolcats and listen to Weird Al Yankovic songs. They see me mowin, my front lawn...

In nature, sustaining yourself and staying alive are generally full time, difficult and energy consuming activities, whereas most people in western civilization don't have to do jack shit to fulfill the basic survival needs. whether it be trust fund kids, stay at home moms or just people who have completely meaningless jobs that don't require them to think or even do anything... for a lot of people surviving just means passing the time and stuffing your face.Agreeance. I think luxury, laziness, and lifespan are three of the major contributers to the rise of diagnoses of depression in developed countries. Luxury: Not too often in human history have the majority of people had the time to sit around and ponder whether or not they were happy. They were busy surviving. Laziness: Well, not laziness exactly but the lack of physical activity. Ties in with luxury in that we don't have to be physically active to put food on the table. When you're physically working your ass off you go to bed tired at the end of the day, and are just glad for some rest. Physical activity is also one of the best-documented ways to improve mood. Lifespan: Humans never really lived long enough to give a shit about this kind of stuff. The longer you live, the more likely you are to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety at least once. I don't think people used to have midlife crises at 18 or 20. Oh, and yeah, the pharmaceutical companies pimping their drugs, tied in with 95% of people over the age of 60 being diagnosed with something. This is not to say that I think that depression is not a very real disease-it is. But the lifestyle that our biology is wired for no longer exists in developed countries.

I have never been on antidepressants. I didn't even know about such things until I married my wife. Now, I think that most women are "crazy"
and suffer from some sort of emotional problem.
This is based on my theory that that men are more based on logic and women are more based on emotion...therefore they are more prone to be crazy/emotional. From the statistics I have read a lot of these disorders like borderline personality disorder and bipolar (disorder II) are much much more prevalent in women. They are also prevalent in the gay communities which goes along with my theory because gay men are usually much more emotional than straight men. This is my made up theory but i think there may be something to it. Most of the guys I have known in my life are mentally stable--i cannot say the same for many of the women i have known and dated. |

Well, I don't know about you, but I certainly think the last word on mental illness should be some idiot who dates unstable women. I'll just lock this
up right now, then.
