I'd trade having Tommy Johnston as a neighbor for Michael McDonald! Not that he isn't nice, but wow, just wow... I wish I could channel some Bawdy
Madge-isms right about now.

I've always thought of the Doobie Brothers as a Southern rock band. A shitty, pussified Southern rock band, but southern nonetheless. 'Southern
rock' is a sound; it has nothing to do with where the band members come from.
I have never, ever considered (or heard anyone refer to) CCR, the Band, Def Leppard or REM as "Southern Rock" bands. Skynard pwns all Southern rock bands and is one of the great American rock band. |

The Doobies Bros were NOT pussified pre Mike McDonald. Long Train Runnin pwns any fucking Skynrd. BUT YOU ARE RIGHT THEY ARE SOUTHERN!!!!!!

OK. Before Michael McDonald they were just shitty, not shitty and pussified.

back when I was seeing them around San Jose, they were considered a joke - after all the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & the Holding
Company, Hot Tuna and all the other San Francisco bands totally pwnd them. I couldn't believe it when I left SJ and found out the were a radio hit in
Arizona.

Yeah, "We Built This City" really pwns something.

Yeah, that 60s-70s San Francisco music is unlistenable shit. And a good example that location has nothing to do with sound. CCR came out of the Bay Area around
the same time, but were an awesome band that still holds up today.

San Francisco has never, ever produced listenable music. The very thought of the Haight Ashbury scene makes me nauseous.

"We Built This City" wasn't Jefferson Airplane. It wasn't even Jefferson Starship. It was Starship.
None of whom, incidentally, were SOUTHERN FUCKING ROCK BANDS!!! |

Green Day? You=sad. Journey? Ugs. Corporate Steve Miller pap/crap WTF? That list is SICKENING.

did I say I liked them? I do not like Journey. A lot of those bands were good at first, then became bloated mundane boring fat cats, though when I saw Steve
Miller in 1970 he was already fat.
and being that the Doobie Brothers claimed (falsely, though they are from a city just to the south) to have been a San Francisco band, aren't you saying they suck too? |

The Doobie Brothers NEVER EVER claimed to be part of the San Fran scene. No one would ever lump them into that grotesque list of yours.

Thanks for sending me on a hunt. From their official website (look under the biography tab):
We feel fortunate to have had solid support from the listening public for our efforts with songs ranging in style from the bluesy rock of Long Train Runnin' to the country tinged Black Water to the gospel/jazz rooted Takin' It ToThe Streets, and songs that truly defy classificationAnd to those of us who lived in the 60-early 70s in the San Francisco / San Jose / Santa Cruz area, it was all considered the same area musically kinda like the British Invasion a few years earlier lumped together the Beatles, Stones, Herman's Hermits, and Petula Clark. All the bands played all around the norther/central California area and knew each other. Plus at the time they first hit the big time, it was way cooler to be considered to be from San Francisco rather than San Jose, so they did originally give the impression they were from SF, and may have moved there after they hit it big. |
