Where you are from has NOTHING to do with whether you are Southern rock. TARDS. The Van Zant brothers were born in Iowa. And we have a winner.
Try not to point and laugh too hard people.

Anyone want to throw money that most of the bands listed
as Southern Rock have members that were mostly Southerners? Well? |

Ya think?
And while it could be argued that part of Iowa was below the Mason-Dixon line, it's easier to remind everyone that the Van Zant brothers were born and raised in Florida. |

The mason dixon line is retarded because it does not hit either coast. so it means nothing.
they were before country or southern rock were considered categories, so I'd call them plain rock so....Amish? |

Country and Southern rock were mostly used to describe bands in the 70s, CCR hit it big in the late 60s. They may have had a lot to do with record companies
signing bands that sounded similar and which were labeled southern rock
However, the Doobie Brothers were not southern rock, they were more country rock, like the Eagles |

Classic rock is a category I'd think more appropriately describes the rock music of the late 60's-70's.

CCR are NOT Southern rock. They are more like Pacific Northwest rock. The Doobie SOUND was Southern. There is no Country element whatsoever. Have you even
HEARD "Blackwater"?

Thanks. Any port in a storm. Burger prep, it shall be.
Btw, I know it really doesn't matter where you come from to play Southern Rock. Just trying to pick a fight to keep myself awake. But I digress...Doobies not the greatest. Asked and answered. |

I PROVE YOU WRONG
http://classicrock.about.com/od/history/a/southern_rock.htm In the 50s and 60s, Southern Rock was more a description of an artist's birthplace than a definitive musical style. Artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard were identified by their Southern roots, although their musical themes were somewhat broader than the region. In the late 60s, groups like Creedence Clearwater Revival (California) and The Band (Canada) began achieving some success with a musical style and lyric flavor that evolved into the Southern Rock genre that flourished over the next couple of decades. Changing Definitions, Expanding Boundaries In the 70s, Southern Rock, as exemplified by the likes of The Allman Brothers Band (Georgia), the Marshall Tucker Band (South Carolina), the Charlie Daniels Band (Tennessee), and Lynyrd Skynrd (Florida) emerged with a musical style marked by hard rock guitar, boogie rhythms, and lyrics about the cultural and historical heritage of the South. Groups like the Doobie Brothers often combined Southern Rock with Heavy Metal, though one of that group's biggest hits, "Black Water", has a typical Southern Rock lyric theme. Through the 80s, Southern Rock grew well outside its original geographical boundaries, as evidenced by successful practitioners like AC/DC (Australia) and Def Leppard (Britain). Groups like ZZ Top (Texas) introduced synthesizers to their traditional instrumental mix, and used music videos effectively to maintain their popularity. Southern Rock Today Although Southern Rock enjoys radio airplay only on Classic Rock and Oldies stations these days, a loyal core of fans keeps groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers and the Charlie Daniels Band playing to good sized crowds in small and medium sized venues. Groups such as R.E.M. (Georgia), Blind Melon (Mississippi), Black Crowes (Georgia), Widespread Panic (Georgia), and Jackyl have had success with Southern-oriented lyric and musical themes, but have allied themselves more with the Hard Rock genre than with Southern Rock. Various artists in various songs have promoted the concept that the South will "rise again." So, perhaps, will Southern Rock. I thought I'd made clear that you have but 13 choices:
Allman Brothers Marshall Tucker Elvin Bishop Band Charlie Daniels band ('70's) Lynyrd Skynyrd (and all derivatives, i.e., Rossington-Collins, et al) .38 Special Outlaws Molly Hatchett Blackfoot Black Oak Arkansas Edgar Winter Group Stevie Ray Vaughn ZZ Top (grudgingly included) Atlanta Rhythm Section, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Louisiana's Le Roux, Dixie Dregs, and Sea Level are not southern rock. I considered Little Feat and could be persuaded to exchange them for ZZ Top (which is really a Tex-rock band). Others were considered but ultimately I deemed them unworthy. And if anyone brings up Ram Jam, I'll bambalam your ass... No others will be considered... |
