Let's face it, Drew, the only reason you know Giselle Bunchen is because she's dating Tom Brady. Just like most Americans know supermodels by who their dating. A supermodel increases her cache by dating musicians, actors, or athletes. But just because you don't know who they are doesn't mean they aren't supermodels. Supermodels are defined by their earning power, not by their celebrity status. If it was just based on their celebrity status then Paris Hilton would qualify as a supermodel. Linda Evangelista was supermodel because of what she earned in the fashion industry, as opposed to Rebecca Romijn or Charlize Theron that were successful models but never supermodels. They were more successful than Cindy Crawford in their transitions to Hollywood, but they weren't more successful than her as models and thus weren't supermodels.

I know that there are plenty of American models doing great this day and age. But they're not exactly cultural touchstones in the making, are they? It's not like in the 1980s or 1990s, when supermodels, American and otherwise, were at the top of the world and setting the trends for fashion and culture. Now, in the 2000s, I can count only one active supermodel who even comes close: Gisele Bundchen. What I meant to say in my last post was that America will never produce another world-class, legitimate, superstar top model, as long as people like Tyra Banks are dictating things. It's ironic that Tyra is doing this show to revive the American supermodel, and yet is reinforcing why the American supermodel died in the first place.
