I just came back from vacation with my family.
My brother related a story I had never heard before. When he was about 11 or 12 he accompanied my dad on an emergency call one summer evening. Daddy got the call from the emergency room and told my brother to come with him. On the way to the hospital he told my brother that the patient was a kid about 13 or 14 who had been playing with fireworks and glass bottles.
When they got to the hospital, my dad instructed my brother to wait at the end of the hall while he went in to examine the patient. Right after Daddy entered the patient's room, a man came out of the room and waited just outside the door. After a few minutes Daddy came out and spoke with the man.
Daddy then collected my brother and they returned home. On the way home Daddy told my brother that the boy had lost all sight in one eye and the eye was so mangled it would have to be removed. What my brother had witnessed was my father having to tell another father that his son was going to lose an eye.
There was no lecture or anything like that. It wasn't necessary because my brother got the message.
