Anyone here grow tomatoes? |

I have 5 cherry tomato plants (all diff varieties) and 3 beefsteak plants (same deal). I usually plant them in the ground, but this year we containered them.
They taste great, but the skins on all of them are really, really tough! What causes that?? Is it too late to reverse that on the new growth. I don't even
really want to eat them now.

very hot weather will cause that. as will uneven moisture levels. So be consistent in your waterings and..... move someplace a little cooler? ;)

I don't think tomatoes do well in containers.....they have loose roots that really spread out.
That being said.....mine haven't really taken off yet. I've only eaten one so far....but it was delicious. |

Don't water too much though or you'll kill the taste.

They need lots of sun like they do in the old Italy

Yes, tiny yellow blossoms. I think I planted on the Victoria Day weekend (third w/e in May)? Which was just after the last danger of frost...we had frost later
in spring than usual - I lost some other plants to frost.

then you'll get tomaotes off them. You should start seeing small little green balls anytime.

That must be it, cause we've had a really unusual summer for Oklahoma. Very mild and rainy.
The first tomatoes were bland and we figured that all the rain was ruining the soil, so we've been fertilizing and that helped the taste. They are out in full sun. It's just now getting to where we get sun every day. This is the first week all summer we haven't had rain in the forecast. We haven't even broken 100 degrees yet. It's usually blistering here by now. Next year I'll go back to putting them in the ground. Or can I do that now? |

Someone from Oklahoma has a computer?
Are you the governor or something? |

shorty, it would probably send them into shock if you replanted them now. but if you aren't happy with the tomatoes and aren't gonna eat them as is
anyways, then it probably couldn't hurt I guess.

It seems like mid-July is when they usually start beefing up. I've got plenty of small green boys....but one filled in early.
I've got about 7 plants...all varieties EXCEPT cherrys. I have no room in my life for cherry tomatoes. |

I made gazpacho with fresh farmer's market tomatoes, cucumber and peppers on Saturday. Yum!

I always grow my Beefsteak tomatoes in containers. I've been harvesting tomatoes for three weeks now but i start with large plants. All of the others
tomatooes are in the garden. It looks like I'll get Roma, grape and cherry next week. Heirloom usually come in in mid August.
This is the first year I've planted eggplant. I am uncertain when to pick them -- Right now I have 5-7 eggplants that look about right. I just don't want to pick them when the skin is still super tart. |

In terms of when you get tomatoes to eat, that depends on whether they are determinate or indeterminate. Indeterminate tomatoes appear and ripen across a broad
period of time once they get big enough. Determinate tomatoes produce all their tomatoes at the same time--and they are often slower to develop (at least for
me).
Most cherry tomatoes I've tried have been indeterminate--they get revved up and go to town until frost. A friend of mine suggested crushing eggshells into the soil to counteract the effects of uneven watering. Haven't tried it yet myself. |

Goner, it's too early for tomatoes to be ripe in our neck of the woods.
You'll have tomatoes by mid-August and will be cursing the fact that you can't eat/preserve them quick enough about a week later! I have all sorts of tomato varieties growing. My favourite eating tomatoes are the yellow ones. |
