Yea, how racist of me that I thought she was great and deserving of the award!

Because Brokeback Mountain dealt with gay love in a society where homophobia still runs rampant, that means that it automatically is better than films with "lesser" or completely nonexistant issues? Did you think that the movie about the female boxer, the people walking for 3 hours, or the two whores who kill their husband/sister presented any societal issues? Oh and sorry, but there's no way that Amy Adams is going to win. I love her and would probably be happy if she did but the Academy is not going to award her for a role that she's perfected like three times already; not to mention, there is general agreement that she's overshadowed by her 3 costars. |

Am I the only one who thinks the term "reverse racism" is funny? Racism is racism, wouldn't reverse racism be loving another race?

Speaking of the female boxer, I thought Million Dollar Baby was boring as hell.
I'd put In Bruges in Best Picture, it was entertaining as hell and just an all around really good movie. |

MDB is the only movie that can rival Crash as the shittiest Best Picture winner ever.
Finding Neverland and Sideways were both better movies that would have been more deserving of the win.

I watched "Slumdog Millionaire" and honestly it did very little for me. I went in with fairly high expectations (which may have led to the greatness of my disappointment) and it certainly wasn't terrible or anything, but I didn't love it as much as I thought that I would. It just seemed like the type of film that I'm usually crazy about, but throughout, I was kind of waiting for it to be over.

Million Dollar Baby was spectactular story telling and acting. I had no idea how it would end and it when it started to take that turn I was devastated. I
think I cried 3 times in that movie.
There's a movie I really loved this year that will get no attention at the awards shows....Death At A Funeral. OMG! Funniest shit ever! |

I thought Million Dollar Baby was good but not great. It was moving, but the ending was contrived and Swank's performance is overrated.
I saw Tropic Thunder, and I don't get the buzz for Downey Jr. I'll be livid if someone like him costs Patel a nomination. The more I think of Patel in SM, the more I like him. Very subtle and nuanced performance. |

With the buzz Slumdog is getting, Patel is a shoe in for a nod.

Just saw Benjamin Button, good movie, a bit too long, but overall pretty decent. No where near Slumdog though, and I don't think Pitt's performance
warrants a best actor nomination, let alone a win. Though i'd like to see his mom, Tarajai P Henson, win best supporting actress. She was the standout in
the movie I thought.
I'd put In Bruges in Best Picture, it was entertaining as hell and just an all around really good movie.Totally agree, it was probably my favorite movie of the year. I think for the first time, i'm actually gonna watch all the nominees before the awards. Next up is Milk, which i'm not really looking forward to. I'm waiting to see The Wrestler on the big screen since I think that will end up being my overall favorite. |

I saw Benjamin Button, Milk, The Wrestler, Revolutionary Road, Slumdog and Doubt over the past few weeks/months (what can I say? My vacation at home
included catching up with movies).

No-one ever agrees on the Oscar thread , which is why it's fun!
I saw 3 movies in 3 days: Benjamin Button... I thought Brad Pitt was bland in it, loved Cate Blanchett, the make-up and the 'idea- story-wise' as well as the sets. I found Mr. Pitt was the only thing that distracted me..'no passion' but, I KNOW he'll get nominated because the academy creams their pants over Brad! The Reader: I loved it. I think this will be the most under-rated 'good film'. It's much more than war crimes and Kate Winslet was superb as was the new young actor who played her hormonal lover. It was layered, interesting and something that made you want to 'talk about it' after the movie. Benjamin also didn't hold that for me. Finally, 'Doubt'... The acting was excellent across the board. I have not seen the play but I don't think a movie should be punished because it was a play first! If the actors pull it off and it comes full circle then, yes, it should be up for best film (personally, it's one movie I would put in the top five) the verbal exchanges were mesmorizing throughout. |

Willy2Fun wrote: One nomination (in the 90s) means that they cream themselves over him? Nah. If anything, they're pretty biased against him. I've seen The Wrestler now and I think it's incredible; Rourke and Tomei are flawless and Evan Rachel Wood is really good too. Too bad it probably stands no chance at Best Picture. If Rourke loses Best Actor to a boring biopic performance... ugh. Supporting Actress will be tight with Cruz, Winslet, Davis, and Tomei in the race. I'm really pulling for Tomei (to prove her win wasn't a fluke) or Winslet (who I haven't seen but want to win so bad). Oh, and I saw Valkyrie which I thought sucked ass. I'm only mentioning it because I was really surprised by Tom Wilkinson, who I thought was excellent. |

Brad will get nominated, I'll chew my hat if he doesn't.
I love your Avi..cuz I loved Meryl in Doubt! She was great as was Viola and P.S.H.'man The Wrestler isn't out yet (in Vancouver) I'm really looking forward to it. I'm so happy Mick is back on the screen and I love M. Tomei. Evan Rachel Wood has always interested me even when she was on some family show on T.V., she stood out. I see good things ahead for her! |

If Ben. Button is unfairly showered with nominations, I can see Pitt getting in unfortunately. But seriously, what an emotionless performance for a lead
character. Just goes to show how bad the screenplay is, too. Full of melodrama and cliches, one-dimensional characters, and very corny "metaphors"
(hummingbird). God, I fucking HATE this movie with a burning passion. And now it might upset a deserving winner because of its box office? Hopefully bad
word-of-mouth spreads.

It's all subjective. I thought Benjamin Button was the best movie of the year. And it was Brad's best performance with the exception of Fight Club.
He was flawless in that. If I had to guess though, I think he's the one that will get snubbed from the movie.

His entire performance was one note. I really can't see how it could even be argued that he should win.
Especially considering how good Penn was and i'm assuming how good Rourke is. I just finished watching Milk, much better than I thought it would be. Still not as good as Slumdog, but much better than Benjamin. |
