If you had read the thread, you would realize that everyone (except you) pretty much says, "It's such a great story."I have read the thread. My point is "I don't get" why being feel good (overall but not entirely) precludes it from being a movie worthy of recognition (nomination or win). Lord knows other movies have won on much, much lesser criteria, without excellent direction (which I think SM had), writing, acting (Patel notwithstanding, the children were amazing). But then I guess it goes to the bigger point that we all have our own criteria for why movies are deserving of awards. It seems like people (not you) use feel good as suggesting that a story or movie lacks the gravity a best picture supposedly requires. I'd argue that a movie can sometimes be both.

The Oscars used to be so HUGE for me that, in adulthood, I would make sure I had seen all of the contenders, sip champagne and snack on pate. I am not
kidding. Sad but true. Oscvar night was always special.
But since I've had kids I rarely go to the movies, unless it's a kid's movie. And I miss going to the movies. So much easier to stay home and curl up on the couch with a DVD. But then I fall asleep. So I can't contribute in any meaningful way to this thread. Just saying. |

I agree Patel was stiff and akward throughout the whole movie, but I guess I tried to accept that just being the way the character was. If he showed any
emotion, after getting any of the questions right, it would have ruined the moment I think. So it didn't really bother me, and as loveski said, the kids
did a great job in it.
Now if you want to talk about bad acted movies, Gran Torino is number one on that list. I mean it's a good movie overall, but the acting is God awful. I don't know why i'm watching all the movies when it's still like a month and a half away. It passes the time at least. |

Anyone else old enough to remember Rob Lowe singing with Snow White? What was that '90? '91?' That was the turning point.
After that fiasco they toned down the cheese factor considerably and started to lose their sense of train wreck fun. The medley dance numbers are still a fave, though. |

Dev Patel did a great job of playing it so cool actually. I thought it was very realistic of his character, especially once you figure out his true motivation.
Compare his Millionaire scenes with the emotional outburst he has in that constructed building.
I'm pretty sure Benjamin Button will win Best Picture, although I'm not a huge fan of it. I would prefer Dark Knight, Wall E, Milk or Slumdog Millionare, frankly.

I also loved that moment when he spots Latika in the train station the first time and when he's having a little showdown with the host when he picks the right answer. It's easy to forget his good moments when you've got the kids being generally vivacious. |

I've now seen Milk, Slumdog Millionaire, Benjamin Button and Revolutionary Road.
Of those four, I thought Milk was far and away the best film. It's not going to win, but it should. Benjamin Button will win, because it's the type of movie the Academy always goes for. It's a good movie, but not Best Picture worthy. But it will win. Milk deserves it though. |

Dont those male roles also fall into the stereotypes other than Freeman's which was basically one of those oscars they gave him cuz he has been around for so long. The only Oscar that likely didnt fall along stereotypes mentioned was Louis Gosset jr.Black women clearly have it harder than black men when it comes to Oscars. Just to make it clear to those who might not know, 4 black women have received an Oscar, ever (McDaniel, Goldberg, Berry, and Hudson). This decade alone, 4 black men have managed to win (Washington, Freeman, Fox, and Whitaker). It's pretty sad, since there are so many good black actresses out there who could do wonders if they got meatier roles. |

Huh? The Asian boy was admittedly a bit mediocre, but the girl who played his sister was very impressive for a debut performance and Clint Eastwood was great. It hardly had "bad" acting, in my opinion. Clint was completely over the top and unrealistic, and the asian kid was all sorts of terrible. The girl was alright, but that's about it. |
