I'm so excited for Mo'nique! I can't wait to see Precious, it looks soooo good.

Morgan Freeman is looking very strong for Best Actor, as is George ClooneyWhich movies for these actors? I heard about Clooney in the Air movie and the Goats one, but not Morgan Freeman. Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan -- Best ActressI agree but I'd also include the woman from Bright Star to this once true campaigning starts. |

Morgan Freeman for Invictus I assume. He plays Nelson Mandela.

It's sickening this year to read all the Oscar forums - people are deluding themselves over the chances of flops like Where The Wild Things Are & The
Road. All I ask for is some more Marion Cotillard-ownage.

Ew @ Up. So overrated. The plot was hokey and formulaic. It went downhill after the first 10 minutes.

I hate, hate, hate this 10 Best Picture nominees thing. Totally devalues the entire nomination.

Are there even 10 movies worth nominating? This year seems sucky so far. I can't think Of anything that's been exceptional.

I think 'Nine', if done right, could be a serious contender this year in all categories.

It doesn't solve anything. There's usually only about 4 or 5 worthy of Best Picture, one of which is snubbed and won't even get a nom anyway, and the category is then rounded out by another one or two that are complete shit that have no business there. |

I really think that evil , smooth-talking German should 'win' for S.Actor in Inglorious Bastards (I know, wrong spelling...SHOOT ME, I'm JEWISH!)
He was mesmerizing and very frightening in that role. |

Gregoire wrote:I'd never say that a female director has a lock on a nomination-- haven't only one or two ever been nominated?-- but it's a definite possibility. As far as Best Picture, I'm hoping for some upsets-- I loved Bright Star, as I said earlier, but think that a small film which is more likely to make a big splash is The Last Station. Helen Mirren, James McAvoy, and Christopher Plummer all seem like possible nominations from that film if it's any good (and it looks like it will be). I'm also anxious to see A Single Man and Nine. I'm not at all interested in seeing Up (ITA with the overrated argument on this board) or Up in the Air (George Clooney=meh). "Up in the Air" looks like another angsty film about a disaffected yuppie. Yuck. "Up" will score a nomination only as a consolation for all of Pixar's previous films which were great but were passed over. Invictus sounds like it should be amazing, but it hasn't gotten a lot of press, which has me wondering if it's going to be a complete flop. I love Morgan Freeman (and Mandela-- a great movie should be made about his life), but I usually find Clint Eastwood films far too overhyped and so I wouldn't mind it if this one isn't all it's cracked up to be. As far as the idea that nothing has been great so far in 2009, that's because all the good films come out in November and December. |

Bring it on, film industry. I am so ready. For weeks now I've been looking for something worth leaving the house to see and the pickings are extremely
slim.

Wasn't it going around a few weeks ago that Mo'nique was actually losing her chances at being nommed because of all the diva demands she was making?
i.e. not promoting the movie without being compensated or some other stuff like that? I'd hate to think she'd lose it just for that, but Hollywood sure
works like that sometimes.

Here's the article:
Breakout star Mo'Nique isn't considered that "precious" by executives at Lionsgate, which produced her forthcoming film. In fact, insiders are saying the 41-year-old comedian's bad attitude and shameless demands for money may jeopardize her chance for Oscar glory - all this before the highly anticipated movie opens on Nov. 6. http://www.nydailynews.co...hopes_for_precious_.html |

I did not like "The Last Station". Saw it at Telluride and most people I talked to were in the same boat as me.
Pretty to look at, and the performances are fine, but there is no meat on the bone. I am going with "Up in The Air" as Best Picture winner right now. Not that I want it to win. Saw this at Telluride as well. Good movie (first 20 minutes are great) but then kind of just turns into mainstream Hollywood stuff. Clooney is very good, Farmiga is also very good. I think this is the one they will end up flipping for. |

MArk my words: Chances are VERY slim for Hurt Locker. As good as it is or isn't, it has already nearly been forgotten. No buzz anymore, really; and what
there was never lifted very high. People like it, yes; but in Hollywood, out of sight, out of mind. Unless there is an amazing campaign for it, no luck.
