I had a maid steal a coaster. I still haven't figured that one out yet.

My mom is on oxygen and is always home or else she wouldn't allow one in her house either.
It took a lot of arm twisting. Now she loves it and makes lists for them and finds new things for them to do for her. Which means less things for me do. It's a win, win. |

From what I've heard, referral is really the way to go. I say this even though a huge chunk of my inheritance is tied up in a professional cleaning
service.
If your housekeepie says that he/she is bonded, ask for a certificate of insurance from them. Tuck that away in case they steal your antique crystal sex toys. You will be able to file a claim (assuming they kept their bond in force). If you have lots of delicate stuff and are worried about breakage, ask for a certificate of general liability insurance. I wouldn't worry about bonding and GL insurance. Neither of those actually protects anything, they just enable you to get reimbursed if something is stolen/gets broken. If your housekeepie is in business for themselves and doesn't have employees, bonding is really just something that is going to drive up their costs to you. Better that you just find someone that you trust. If you have lots of delicate and breakable stuff, go ahead and get a professional service - chances are that the $15-$25 more an hour won't be a problem in that case. Guilt keeps me from hiring a house cleaner. I feel like I should be able to do it all myself. I wish I hadn't been such an asshole about this for the past year - I haven't been around much and the cleaning chores have seriously cut into Foo's relaxation time. If I were a girlfriend of merrit, I would have had a housekeeper out there every other week. At least Foo would have had company since I've only been around two days a month. |

I'm surprised so many people use cleaning services. I can't name anyone I know in real life off the top of my head who doesn't clean their house
themselves.

One of the first times I ever had someone come in and clean, she stole a little diamond ring I'd received for my 18th birthday. It had more sentimental
value than anything else because my father had picked it out for me. I couldn't prove anything, and she was my landlord's cleaning lady and he was
positive I was mistaken and she was trustworthy. Oh well.
Anyway, I've never used a service, but I've had great luck other than that first one. |

My current cleaning lady is great. She charges $80 per visit and is here for 6 hours. She does laundry and changes all the linens. When she is bored and has
run out of things to clean she starts organizing closets and drawers.
The service I had prior to her was awful. They broke two pieces of art and chipped the countertops in the kitchen two weeks after they were installed. |

we have someone come once a month, she only does the big stuff, floors, windows, baseboards, stove, etc.
we pay her $25 an hour she uses my cleaning stuff, but her vacuum/broom/duster, etc cause she prefers it that way. I'd definitely stay home the first few times, until you're comfy with them and you can also see how much gets done in an hour so you can figure your cleaning budget and make chore lists accordingly |

I've only known three people who use housekeepies. I don't think I could give up the privacy because you just know they're going to talk about you,
and your quirks, and what it's like in your house with everyone they know.
