I had a dream last night where I was in Beijing and helping with gathering up the flags for all the countries. I know, kinda boring, but I could somehow speak
flawless Mandarin. Weird...

There's something on the National Geographic channel about the stadiums right now, if anyone cares.

What did Canada do for Nagano, dress them like Ninjas?

What Chinese Olympic athletes will be wearing...
Don't put it past Communist China to secretly put bird flu, anthrax or some other deadly chemical into their polluted Beijing air to harm world tourists. They've already attacked U.S. soil with lead poisioning. We just made it easier for them attending this Olympics.

Speaking of Canada: Do you ever see ANYTHING "made in Canada"? Is that a good thing? Is Canada just really lazy with making products?

Actually, remember all that cool Roots winter gear that the US team wore in Torino?
Made in Canada. Anyhow, I strayed across this earlier. 20 Ways to Die in the Summer Olympics Ouch ouch ouch ouch.... |

Do y'all remember what happened at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy? The athletes marched in to the accompaniment of a
mix of 1970s and 1980s European and American pop songs. Mongolia unfortunately marched in to the sounds of "Video Killed The Radio Star", Slovakia to
"YMCA", and Denmark to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", among others. That was great, though they omitted "It's Raining
Men". I wonder if they're going to do the same for tomorrow night's opening ceremony?
Some suggestions, albeit politically incorrect ones: ARMENIA - "If I Could Turn Back Time", Cher ARGENTINA - "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina (Radio Remix)", Madonna AUSTRALIA - "Down Under", Men at Work BRAZIL - "The Girl from Ipanema", Astrud Gilberto CANADA - "Working for the Weekend", Loverboy DENMARK - "Barbie Girl", Aqua EGYPT - "Walk Like An Egyptian", The Bangles FINLAND - "Rock and Roll Hallelujah", Lordi FRANCE - "French Bitch", Pussy Tourette GERMANY - "Looking For Freedom", David Hasselhoff GREAT BRITAIN - the standard Idols theme done by Cathy Dennis GREECE - "I Kissed A Girl", Katy Perry ICELAND - "It's Oh So Quiet", Bjork INDIA - "You Really Got Me", Sanjaya Malakar IRAQ - "Don't Leave Me This Way", Thelma Houston IRELAND - "Nothing Compares 2 U", Sinead O'Connor JAMAICA - "Ur So Gay", Katy Perry KAZAKHSTAN - "In My Country There Is Problem", Borat NORTH KOREA - "Insane In The Membrane", Cypress Hill MONGOLIA - "Video Killed The Radio Star", The Buggles NETHERLANDS - "Pass The Dutchie", Musical Youth NEW ZEALAND - "How Bizarre", OMG (or whatever it's called) NORWAY - "Take On Me", a-ha PUERTO RICO - "Livin' la Vida Loca", Ricky Martin RUSSIA - "They're Not Gonna Get Us", Tatu SAUDI ARABIA - "It's Raining Men", The Weather Girls SERBIA - "Molitva", Marija Serifovic SINGAPORE - "Whip It", Devo SLOVAKIA - "YMCA", The Village People SOUTH AFRICA - "Physical", Olivia Newton-John SPAIN - "Asereje (the Ketchup Song)", Las Ketchup SWEDEN - "Dancing Queen", ABBA THAILAND - "One Night In Bangkok", Murray Head TRINIDAD & TOBAGO - "Get Out Of My Dreams, Get Into My Car", Billy Ocean TURKEY - "Everyway That I Can", Sertab Erener UKRAINE - "Wild Horses", Ruslana UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - "We Built This City", Starship UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - "Gimme More", Britney Spears VANUATU - "Happy Happy Joy Joy" (theme from The Ren & Stimpy Show) VENEZUELA - "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", Prince |

I remember seeing footage of a guy (one who checks the distance of a throw) stabbed by a thrown javelin.
Probably the BEST Olympic flame lighting (Barcelona '92) |

Yeah I've seen that too. I can't believe the field judge survived.
I'd seen the soccer goalie clip before, but I can still watch it repeatedly. Check out #14, the swimmer from Equatorial Guinea -- despite the laugh factor, in some ways, that's what the Olympics are all about. |

AlexDSSF, great job!
CHINA = China Girl (David Bowie) I still think USA 1984 Olympics will always be the best. We had Jetpack man, UFO/alien, Mary Lou Retton, Carl Lewis, the coolest looking mascot Sam the Eagle, John Williams, 88 grand pianos playing "Rhapsody in blue", NO professional basketball players or Soviet Commie countries participating, and U.S.A. won the most medals. Great memories. Time to get out the old tapes. |

Dumb question: is the leaderboard determined by the total number of medals won or by the number of gold medals won?
|

jmj007 |

iismepeter, The leaderboard goes by Gold medals first.
Here is an example of the final medal count from the 1984 Olympics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_Summer_Olympics_medal_count Notice that New Zealand was #8 in gold medals but their total was 11. Yugoslavia is #9 with 7 gold yet had 18 total. By the way, no question is dumb! :) All time medal count shows USA in the lead with the Soviets 2nd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_count

Whoa! The body painting thing is awesome! The whole painting thing is just so creative and beautiful! Certainly, something new. I really didn't expect much, but the opening ceremony so far is the best I've ever seen. Way, way beyond better than any olympic opening ceremonies before. WOW!

I can NOT believe the fucking CBC has commercials during live show. Thank God for the french network! I'm so glad CBC is out after this....I hope CTV
will do better.

just remembered the "if you don't want to know who won, turn your sound down" as they don't show anything that happens live and it
happened about 12 hours earlier
